The local veterans group laid a wreath on Friday afternoon to honor the 286 Lynchburg soldiers who fought and died in wars like WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Purple Heart recipients also gathered around Monument Terrace to celebrate National Purple Heart Day and take a picture. ...Were trying to show our support for even those that are coming back today that are wounded, or even those that gave their time for service to our country, said Lynchburg veteran Gary Witt. BEDFORD, Va. – Bedford has a deep connection to World War II, and the town commemorated one of the war’s most important dates Friday morning. Church bells filled the air for the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, the day World War II officially ended in Europe. 19 men from Bedford, known as the “Bedford Boys,” were killed while storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, which itself commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day last year, had planned a parade in town for V-E Day. Although the parade has been canceled, National D-Day Memorial President April Cheek-Messier said the bells still illustrate the significance of this day.

In 2016, Turner says he played a part in getting a WWII bomber plane to Roanoke. He says, as soon as he heard this B-17 bomber, associated with another organization, was coming to Lynchburg, he knew he had to make the trip. "Young lady introduced herself and said she was affiliated with the B-17 and Would you like to have it visit Lynchburg?' "It is rare and it's rare that a plane like this could visit Lynchburg.

There are still 72,000 Americans soldiers from WWII who are unaccounted for, according to the Defense Department.

"He was shaking, almost in tears saying he barely made it to the store on three tires because one was bad," Rudy Somoza, another manager, told CNN. Lee was able to park but had no one to help change his tire. It took Howard about 15 minutes to change the tire.
