Friday, Virginia Tech leaders honored Miller, who died when he jumped on a grenade to save those around him during the Vietnam War in 1969. โ€œItโ€™s a sad reminder of the sacrifices that these brave people made but it enriches the culture of Virginia Tech and adding that story is a phenomenal step forward in students understanding where the came from and why they have the freedoms they have,โ€ Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said. It was only recently discovered that Miller, a Covington native, attended a branch of Virginia Tech before being deployed. After making the ultimate sacrifice to protect more American lives than just his own, Millerโ€™s name will stay etched on the cenotaph for those to honor his life for decades to come.

For Virginia Tech students, there may be a lot of uncertainty heading into the new school year but one thing is certain: if youre going to be living on-campus, youre going to be tested for the coronavirus. Youll be assigned a move in time and a testing time, Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said during a virtual town hall Friday. For those who refuse to be tested, their on-campus housing agreement will be canceled, except under certain circumstances. Students living off-campus will not be required to get tested because testing students living off-campus is more complicated, Sands said, but testing will be available through the universitys health center. Maybe the best option is to isolate on campus, Sands said.

BLACKSBURG, Va. A building on Virginia Techs campus could have a new name. Virginia Tech President Tim Sands announced Monday that hes asking for a review of the name of Lee Hall. The building, which opened in 1966, is named for Claudius Lee, and serves as a residence hall that houses 811 students, according to the university. According to the university, during the 125th anniversary of Virginia Tech, students in a history class came across a page in the 1896 yearbook that listed Lee as a leader in the campus chapter of the KKK. As part of the process this time around, Sands has asked the Council on Virginia Tech History to examine this issue and make a recommendation.

The meeting was one of the demands made by students and others at the Climate Strike Rally on campus last Friday. The meeting came from the demand at the rally, just one rally of many happening around the globe that day. The activists went into their meeting with Sands hoping the university would sign their climate emergency letter that said the university would promise climate education and make a promise to switch to renewable energy. 10 News tried to speak with Sands about the meeting, but a university spokesman said that he was unavailable to talk.

A ceremony on the schoolโ€™s Drill Field highlighted the bond that still exists a decade later formed after that tragedy. For President Tim Sands, the names bring back the memories. โ€œI remember 10 years ago, watching events unfold from a distance, as a father, university professor, and administrator,โ€ said Sands. Senator Tim Kaine recalled returning quickly from state business abroad 10 years ago to comfort the same families that sat before him Sunday.
