SMYTH COUNTY, Va. – A man is in a Southwest Virginia jail after leading police on a high-speed chase, according to the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office. At about 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday, a Smyth County deputy monitoring southbound traffic on Interstate 81 clocked a vehicle going 103 mph. The chase went 24 miles down I-81, from mile marker 54, near Atkins, to mile marker 30, near Glade Spring. He is currently being held at the Abingdon Regional Jail without bond pending an arraignment in the Smyth County General District Court. Smyth County deputies were assisted by officers from the Chilhowie Police Department and the Virginia State Police.

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – HOPE Inc. in Wytheville is asking you to grab your bike out of the garage or hop on an exercise bike to ride the distance and give back along the way. Friday, Oct. 16 is the first day of The Fast and the Fiorini 17th annual charity ride. The ride was created in 2004 and was originally named The Big Walker Ride, but was renamed after Ian Fiorini who was instrumental in starting the first ride. Before the pandemic, HOPE was housing one to two people in motels but since the COVID-19 outbreak, they hit a peak of 44 people a night. So know when you register to ride that fee will help fund hope when people need it the most.

Virginia legislators, Smyth County and Chilhowie officials, state and local law enforcement and transportation officials and family and friends gathered in Chilhowie to ceremoniously dedicate the Interstate 81 bridge over Whitetop Road as the Trooper Lucas B. Dowell Bridge. Virginia state Sen. Charles Carrico and Virginia State Police Association Executive Director M. Wayne Huggins were among the speakers, which also included Dowell's mother, Rebecca. Virginia State Police Dowell's parents, Mike and Rebecca, as well as his sister, Erica, pictured with the newly installed sign. On Aug. 2, the town of Amherst dedicated the South Main Street/Route 29 Business bridge over Route 29 as the Trooper Lucas B. Dowell Bridge.

ROANOKE, Va. - Two confirmed members of the Crips in North Carolina were arrested and charged after a three-county police chase through southwest Virginia, according to the Wythe County Sheriff's Office. Authorities say a Wythe County deputy saw two men in a 2017 Toyota Prius going 97 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-81 on Wednesday. The deputy also ran the plates and discovered that the Prius was stolen out of Raleigh, North Carolina. A Smyth County deputy then reportedly spun the car out in the yard and the two men ran away from the car. Sinclair was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a schedule 1 or 2, possession of a schedule 1 or 2 while in possession of a gun.
