One case was announced on Oct. 12, and the other two were announced on Oct. 15. The person whose case was announced on Oct. 12 and one of the people whose case was announced on Oct. 15 were both in the building last on Oct. 7 for after school activities only. The second person whose case was announced on Oct. 15 was last in the building during school hours on Oct. 9. In all three cases, officials say that no one else was exposed to the virus while they were on school property.

Earlier in the week, Brooke Leonard brought us the story of three Lord Botetourt senior football players committing to play at Appalachian State University. Saturday, the Salem Spartans had a trio of talented football players that also decided to suit up together on the college gridiron. Zavione Wood, Jorden McDonald and Jayden McDonald all announced that they will play football at the University of Louisiana Monroe. Wood rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and over 10 touchdowns in 2019, while also playing effective defense at middle linebacker for the Spartans.

A Salem High School teacher returned to the classroom for the first time since receiving the state's top honor for educators. Wednesday was just like any other day at Salem High School for Andrea Johnson, a 12th grade career, communications and college preparation English teacher, except for one not-so-small thing. On Monday night, Johnson was named Virginia's 2020 Teacher of the Year during a ceremony in Richmond. It's not the first time a teacher from Salem has been honored. This coming spring, Johnson heads to the White House to compete for the 2020 title of National Teacher of the Year.

SALEM, Va. - Salem City and school leaders met Tuesday night to talk about the funding and timeline for Salem High School's massive $36 million renovation. "We're at a pretty exciting point," said Dr. Alan Seibert, the school division's superintendent. Seibert said the district plans to send out bids for contractors at the end of December and pick one by the end of January. After picking one, school leaders will work with the new contractor to brainstorm ways to improve design plans and save money before hopefully breaking ground in May. The school district has been working closely with police and city council on the project.
