LYNCHBURG, Va. - Gladys Road, near Perkys restaurant, on Route 29 in Campbell County is one of the most dangerous roads to cross in the Lynchburg District. Two years ago, Virginia Department of Transportation officials did a safety study on route 29, starting from Lynchburgs airport to Route 24 Village HighwayWere trying to stay ahead of the curve. Were trying to implement low-cost improvements that create those safe environments, Lynchburg District Planning Manager Rick Youngblood said. Six months ago, VDOT put flashing lights near the intersection to warn drivers of other cars in the area, but that's not enough. The meeting will be held at VDOTs Ramey Memorial Auditorium, 4303 Campbell Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - A 63-year-old Chatham woman died in a car crash Thursday afternoon in Pittsylvania County. The crash happened on Route 29, two-tenths of a mile north of Route 29 Business at 3:45 p.m., according to Virginia State Police. A 2017 Peterbilt 330 transport truck was traveling south on Route 29, when it ran off the right side of the road, hit the guardrail crossed the southbound lanes, ran through the median and hit struck a 2014 Nissan Rogue which was traveling north on Route 29. Josephine Gee, the driver of the Nissan was wearing her seat belt and died at the scene. Police say the information for the driver of the Peterbilt is not available at this time and charges are pending.

Preparations for the closure of the northbound lanes of Lee Highway in northern Fauquier County are moving ahead as VDOT looks to improve the stopping sight distance on the approach to the Route 215 intersection. The Route 29 northbound approach to the Route 215 intersection ranks as the No. The project will regrade the northbound lanes and remove two hills that have contributed to crashes. During that time, northbound traffic will detour using Route 17 north from Warrenton to Interstate 66 at Marshall and then using I-66 east to Gainesville. The closure will not affect southbound traffic and drivers will be able to turn onto and from Route 215 during the closure.
