School leaders and health advocates in Roanoke County are sounding the alarm about the dangers of smartphones in the hands of children.

If it’s decided upon to play District schedules, teams would be required to meet the protocols that each district sets out. Each districts protocols are said to be released on Thursday, one week prior to when the County has decided to make a decision. The 5 Roanoke County high schools are spread out across Blue RIdge, River Ridge and Three Rivers Districts. ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – The current state of Roanoke County Public Schools is anything but normal in 2020. Roanoke County schools began the year with a hybrid plan of having some students in the building and other working remotely. “We are also working to develop and promote a culture of kindness, respect and responsibility in our schools,” said Wray. “Roanoke County Public Schools is implementing a nationwide program called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS. There are three main tenants of the PBIS program at Roanoke County Public Schools – Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible.”Licensed mental health professionals, known as “life coaches” on campus, are positioned at schools across the system and readily available.

ROANOKE, Va Local school nurses will soon be on the frontlines as thousands of students and teachers return to classrooms in just a matter of weeks. They are being trained on everything from COVID-19 screening to steps to take if there is an outbreak in a school. When it comes to a potential outbreak in a school, Roanoke County Schools will be working with the Department of Health to decide what the safest option is. To prevent students from going to school when they are sick, the school division is sending home a checklist to families to screen students for potential health issues before returning each day. School nurses will also work with parents to determine if students need to stay home and switch to online learning.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – A multi-year, multi-million dollar project to renovate Cave Spring High School is just about finished. Work was still on schedule at the high school Wednesday in Roanoke County despite being halted earlier this year when some workers tested positive for the coronavirus. Move-in could start as early as the end of the week according to the school district’s spokesperson. As 10 News has reported, the county spent $43 million on the school, focusing on safety and creating a 21st century building.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. Roanoke County school leaders are trying to figure out how to work with the county to best use CARES Act funds. The discussion came up during a school board work session Wednesday to talk about childcare needs. CARES Act money is what the federal government has given localities to help them through the coronavirus pandemic. The requirements for using the money are different for the county than they are for the school district, so the two sides are trying to figure out how the money can be used to free up about $300,000 for the school district for child care needs locally.

The executive director of the Prevention Council of Roanoke, Nancy Hans, said multiple churches have reached out, asking how they can help.
