The airport’s director of marketing, Brad Boettcher, said lower fares and increased COVID-19 vaccinations are the main reasons for the rise in travel. “It’s just getting people with shots in arms who are comfortable getting out and traveling again,” Boettcher said. “The weather is improving and people do want to get out.”Boettcher does not expect the airport to experience pre-pandemic levels of passenger traffic until next year.

ROANOKE, Va. – Crews cleared a runway after a small plane crash landed at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport Saturday morning. At about 10:45 a.m., a Cessna T210N with two people on board crash landed at the airport. Authorities said no one was hurt. The airport’s Rescue and Firefighting and Operations crews responded to the incident. Officials said the aircraft was removed from the runway with clean-up soon wrapping up.

ROANOKE, Va. – 2020 is over and it’s a year that the airline industry certainly wants to leave in the past. For the year, the 291,718 passengers to fly into and out of Roanoke mark a 59% decrease from 2019′s 719,707. For December, the airport saw a 6% drop from November’s numbers; however, that holds true every year since 2015. December 2020 had 23,384 people fly, which represents a drastic improvement since April’s 1,823 total passengers. “Passengers are more and more comfortable with the measures taken by the air carriers and airports to ensure their safety,” stated David Jeavons, interim executive director of the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission.

ROANOKE, Va. – Two executives at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport have resigned after they were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation last year. Officials with the airport confirmed Tuesday evening that executive director Timothy Bradshaw and director of planning and engineering Richard Osbourne both resigned. As 10 News reported back in November, Bradshaw and Osborne were on administrative leave pending an investigation. Airport officials said the internal investigation was regarding a procedural matter, but did not release further details to the public about it. Bradshaw has been with the airport since 2014.

While October 2020 was down 62.91% from Oct. 2019, November 2020 was down just 60.15% from Nov. 2019.

ROANOKE, Va. – Holiday travel is already in swing with more people hitting the road rather than flying by air. On Tuesday, 700 people came through the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, making it the busiest day the airport has seen since start of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s still trending above the national average and it’s a significant bump from where we were a couple of weeks ago,” said Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport marketing and air service development director Brad Boettcher. ROANOKE, Va. – As the coronavirus pandemic entered its eighth month, more people are flying. In October, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport reported 25,783 passengers, marking an increase of 4,124 passengers, or 19%, compared to September 2020 numbers. Looking back to October 2019 traffic, this October’s numbers were down 62%; however, the airport said on a national level, traffic was off 65%, meaning Roanoke’s airport is performing slightly better than the national trend. In October 2019, 69,517 people flew into and out of the Star City, which represents the aiport’s highest traffic month since 2015. Despite traffic being down year over year, it has increased or remained flat every month since bottoming out in April at just 1,823 passengers.

ROANOKE, Va. – Just in time for the holiday travel season, Roanoke’s airport opened its new car rental facility on Tuesday. The airport’s marketing and air service development director Bradley Boettcher said that before the new development, getting a rental car seemed disjointed as the cars were parked in the long-term lot and the rental counters were in the terminal. The more than $6 million project includes a vestibule, a lobby with four rental car counters, restrooms and a new reconfigured parking lot, which can hold up nearly 200 rental cars. He said with less business travel and the pandemic, their traffic numbers are cut in half, although hopes traffic will pick back up to reach those numbers again. The year and a half construction project was funded by car rental customer facility charges.

Because September is a day shorter than August, the airport doesn’t see the change as a decrease, rather, a flat month. “We are pleased to see passenger traffic holding steady as we move out of summer and into the fall,” said Timothy T. Bradshaw, the executive director of the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission. In 2016 and 2019, more people flew; however, in 2015, 2017 and 2018 the airport saw an August to September decrease.

ROANOKE, Va. – Tens of thousands of airline employees could be out of a job soon, now that federal relief funding has officially ended for the airline industry. However, Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport will not feel the effects as harshly as other airports. Both carriers fly into ROA, but airline spokesperson Brad Boettcher said the furloughs will likely just result in revised flight schedules. Boettcher said regional airports such as Roanoke are not heavily affected by the furloughs, but large hubs and international airports will be. "That’s where you’re going to see more of the impact: mainline flying, and not necessarily the regional flying we have here.”

They found a .22-caliber handgun, loaded with five bullets, in the mans carry-on bag during a TSA checkpoint screening. Airport police confiscated the weapon after being alerted by the TSA agents. It is a law that has been in place long before TSA even existed, said Federal Security Director for the airport Chuck Burke. Our TSA officers are very skilled at detecting firearms and other prohibited items.A typical first offense for carrying a loaded handgun into a checkpoint is $4,100 and can go as high as $13,669 depending on any mitigating circumstances, according to the TSA.

ROANOKE, Va. – Two people were hurt during a plane’s landing at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport on Friday afternoon, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS. At about 1:10 p.m., a Diamond DA20 aircraft had a hard landing on one of the runways and it eventually came to rest in a grass safety area. Star Flight Training announced that one of their flight school aircraft was involved in an accident on Thursday. They said there were no “significant” injuries and that both occupants were doing fine. While initially closed, the runway has since reopened and the airport is operational.

In the last 10 days, the airport has seen at least 100 passengers a day. Airport directors said no carriers have pulled out and they don't expect that to happen. "I fly all the time, so I’m used to it.”Katherine Thatcher is a big fan of masks on airplanes. ROANOKE, Va. – While you won’t see a Boeing 737 Max landing in Roanoke, the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is feeling the effects of the grounding of these jets. A spokesperson for the airport said Monday that American Airlines is down about 50 planes and that those losses are the biggest obstacle holding back a potential new flight to Dallas. An air service consulting firm that the airport hired recently released a report showing a direct option to Dallas would be profitable. Getting more regional planes is one option for American, he said, and one of those planes may become the Roanoke-to-Dallas flight. Delta doesn’t use the specific plane from Boeing, and most of the flights in and out of Roanoke are in planes smaller than those.
