(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)When President Donald Trump sends lawyers to court, it seems heโ€™s not sending his best. Fighting to challenge an election he lost to President-elect Joe Biden, Trump has launched a barrage of lawsuits across the country. They also argued a debunked conspiracy theory that Venezuela could have hacked election results through machines used by local authorities. โ€œIโ€™ve never seen an election lawyer handle a case as poorly as Giuliani has,โ€ Hasen said. An attachment to the filing, in citing state election law, references โ€œonly one pole watcherโ€ instead of โ€œpoll watcher.โ€Experts say Trump has almost no chance of reversing his loss.

California GOP considers adding more disputed ballot boxes

They are not as secure as government drop boxes, which are put in well-lighted places and are tamper-proof,โ€ he said. The California GOP drop boxes are a new version of โ€œvote harvesting," which is legal in California and allows party volunteers to collect multiple ballots and deliver them to election officials. Some of the party's drop boxes were labeled as โ€œofficial,โ€ even though they are not authorized by county election officials. Jessica Levinson, an election law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles said labeling the boxes official clearly was illegal. โ€œI'm assuming they decided on less labor-intensive ways of trying to get at it,โ€ he said of the Republican drop boxes.

NC court strikes down state legislative districts as unconstitutional

People gather in in front of the U.S. Supreme Court as decisions are handed down in Washington, DC. (CNN) - A state court in North Carolina unanimously struck down Republican-led efforts to maintain state legislative districts on Tuesday, holding that they amount to unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders that violate the state's Constitution. Now, in North Carolina, a top Republican state legislative leader told local reporters in a statement that the GOP will not appeal the state court's ruling against state House and Senate districts there. While the US Supreme Court recently declined to step in to decide a separate challenge to federal maps in the state, the North Carolina court observed that provisions of state constitutions "could provide standards and guidance for state courts to apply." The North Carolina Democratic Party, registered Democratic voters and Common Cause brought the lawsuit last year.

Federal Election Commission may sit out 2020 elections

Read full article: Federal Election Commission may sit out 2020 elections

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The federal agency charged with policing violations of campaign finance laws just lost its power to enforce those laws as the country heads into the 2020 elections. The Federal Election Commission will have just three members following the departure of Matthew Petersen, who announced on Monday that he will resign his commission post August 31. Federal law requires four or more commissioners to approve new rules or take actions to punish those who violate election law. The agency was already "dysfunctional," Rick Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine, wrote on Twitter. Trump nominated Texas lawyer Trey Trainor to the commission in 2017, but the Senate has not acted on his nomination.
