After talking with Atlantic Coast Conference officials, Virginia Tech leaders and the athletic department’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark Rogers, the decision has been made to temporarily pause volleyball competition and practices. This decision has been out of an abundance of caution and based on the lack of availability of multiple members of the Virginia Tech team. Tech has informed its counterparts at NC State and Duke that it will not be able to compete in upcoming matches scheduled for Oct. 2-3 at NC State and for Oct. 9-10 at DukePending the necessary player availability to resume practice, Tech is optimistic about resuming competition at home vs. Virginia on Oct. 16.

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina State says safety Khalid Martin is being discharged from a Virginia hospital with no “radiographic abnormalities” after being examined for a possible spinal cord injury. The football team provided the update a day after Martin collided with teammate Tyler Baker-Williams while attempting to tackle a Virginia Tech player in the third quarter of a 45-24 loss. Martin was taken from the field in an ambulance to a hospital for what N.C. State initially said was a hip injury. The Wolfpack later said Martin was heading back to Raleigh after being discharged from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he underwent further examination.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Short-handed Virginia Tech beat NC State 45-24 on Saturday. Before the game, it was announced that Virginia Tech would be without 23 players due to injury and undisclosed reasons, including starting quarterback Hendon Hooker and starting defensive back Jermaine Waller. The Hokies took a 17-0 lead 7:49 into the game on a 46-yard field goal by Brian Johnson, a 37-yard touchdown run by Khalil Herbert and an 8-yard touchdown run by Raheem Blackshear. Johnson then gave Virginia Tech a 37-10 lead on a pair of third-quarter field goals. Virginia Tech all but put the game away with 8:56 remaining, when Patterson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and a successful 2-point conversion gave the Hokies a 45-17 lead.

Any other year, Hokie fans would tell you can’t have football without tailgating, Enter Sandman and a stadium full of cheering students. “College football and game day and tailgating is such a deep valued tradition here at Virginia Tech we always look forward to the fall to be able to do that we’ve been doing it for decades, but this is an unusual year,” Virginia Tech Spokesperson Mark Owczarski said. Because of COVID-19, there will be several health precautions and restrictions when the Hokies take the field against NC State. Virginia Tech leaders agree that they are looking forward to the day when things can return to normal, but safety is the top priority for now.
