Boston College, Miami, North Carolina and Pitt followed with seven selections each, and NC State had six. ACC leading rusher Michael Carter of North Carolina (1,245 yards/8.0 yards per carry) is the other first-team running back. Notre Dame tackle Liam Eichenberg, announced earlier Tuesday as the 2020 Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, led the offensive line voting. Virginia scored 14 consecutive points after going down 24-0 to NC State early in the game. That set up his first career touchdown pass to wide receiver Billy Kemp IV (Highland Springs, Va.). NC State scored again when it returned an interception for a touchdown. The Cavaliers attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by NC State. BLACKSBURG, Va. – One Virginia Tech sport is on hold at the moment. After talking with Atlantic Coast Conference officials, Virginia Tech leaders and the athletic department’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark Rogers, the decision has been made to temporarily pause volleyball competition and practices. This decision has been out of an abundance of caution and based on the lack of availability of multiple members of the Virginia Tech team. Tech has informed its counterparts at NC State and Duke that it will not be able to compete in upcoming matches scheduled for Oct. 2-3 at NC State and for Oct. 9-10 at DukePending the necessary player availability to resume practice, Tech is optimistic about resuming competition at home vs. Virginia on Oct. 16.

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina State says safety Khalid Martin is being discharged from a Virginia hospital with no “radiographic abnormalities” after being examined for a possible spinal cord injury. The football team provided the update a day after Martin collided with teammate Tyler Baker-Williams while attempting to tackle a Virginia Tech player in the third quarter of a 45-24 loss. Martin was taken from the field in an ambulance to a hospital for what N.C. State initially said was a hip injury. The Wolfpack later said Martin was heading back to Raleigh after being discharged from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he underwent further examination.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Short-handed Virginia Tech beat NC State 45-24 on Saturday. Before the game, it was announced that Virginia Tech would be without 23 players due to injury and undisclosed reasons, including starting quarterback Hendon Hooker and starting defensive back Jermaine Waller. The Hokies took a 17-0 lead 7:49 into the game on a 46-yard field goal by Brian Johnson, a 37-yard touchdown run by Khalil Herbert and an 8-yard touchdown run by Raheem Blackshear. Johnson then gave Virginia Tech a 37-10 lead on a pair of third-quarter field goals. Virginia Tech all but put the game away with 8:56 remaining, when Patterson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and a successful 2-point conversion gave the Hokies a 45-17 lead.

BLACKSBURG, Va – On Saturday night, the Virginia Tech Hokies will take the field for their first game of the season at Lane Stadium. Any other year, Hokie fans would tell you can’t have football without tailgating, Enter Sandman and a stadium full of cheering students. “College football and game day and tailgating is such a deep valued tradition here at Virginia Tech we always look forward to the fall to be able to do that we’ve been doing it for decades, but this is an unusual year,” Virginia Tech Spokesperson Mark Owczarski said. Because of COVID-19, there will be several health precautions and restrictions when the Hokies take the field against NC State. Virginia Tech leaders agree that they are looking forward to the day when things can return to normal, but safety is the top priority for now.

NC State’s visit to Lane stadium will include a bittersweet homecoming for a member of there coaching staff. Assistant Charley Wiles spent 24 years alongside Bud Foster, and another two as a grad assistant under head coach Frank Beamer. But he’ll enter Lane stadium Saturday wearing the visiting Wolfpack colors. Wiles played for Coach Frank Beamer at Murray State as well. NC State at Virginia tech is set to kick off at 8 p.m. from Lane Stadium.

In his weekly press conference head coach Justin Fuente said the team will not have a full roster and that he hopes the 3 Covid tests this week yield good results. “Ultimately I don’t know if I’ve been this close to a game and felt as uneasy about who we will actually have in the game as I do right now. Just getting it nailed down of exactly who’s going to do what. And after a game, it becomes so much clearer where your team stands, where your position groups are and who’s capable and consistent and finishing plays.

The Hokies game against NC State, which was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, will now be played Sept. 26. Virginia Tech is now scheduled to open the 2020 football season on Saturday, Sept. 19 against the University of Virginia at Lane Stadium.
