LYNCHBURG, Va. – Virginia State Police need your help to find the person responsible for shooting a drone as it flew over the Lynchburg Regional Airport. The drone was hit several times on Oct. 6, 2020, according to police, as it was surveying and identifying potential hazards to aircraft, a safety measure for passengers and crew members, according to aviation officials. The drone was following FAA standards. “There’re many standards that are basically used to protect surroundings of an airport for safety, for keeping what’s called ‘approach surfaces’ clear,” explained Vernon Carter, the manager of security and facilities for the Virginia Department of Aviation. LYNCHBURG, Va. – Local airports now have plexiglass shields designed to keep you safe before you fly. The TSA just installed the acrylic shields at Lynchburg Regional Airport. Lynchburg airport officials told 10 News the protectors add another layer of safety. ROANOKE, Va. – If you have plans to fly out of Roanoke, you’ll want to make sure they’re still happening. That’s the advice the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is giving travelers as airlines are canceling flights out of the Star City because of significant decreases in passenger traffic. American, Delta and United are often canceling flights either the day before, or the day of flights, according to airport representatives. At the Lynchburg Regional Airport, officials said they used to have seven daily flights scheduled to and from Charlotte with American Airlines. Now, there are only three or four daily flights.

A Danville woman was stopped after a loaded handgun was found in her carry on at Lynchburg Regional Airport on Tuesday, according to TSA officials. Officials say a TSA agent found a .38 caliber handgun loaded with five bullets in her bag as it entered the checkpoint X-ray machine. TSA officials then contacted local police who took the gun and detained the woman for questioning before issuing her a summons. She reportedly told officials that she forgot she had her loaded gun with her.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. - Authorities are asking for help identifying a man shown on surveillance footage stealing luggage. A red dufflel bag and two black suitcases were stolen Friday at 3:30 p.m. from the Lynchburg Regional Airport, according to the Campbell County Sheriff's Office. Authorities also say the man was seen leaving the airport in a red Ford Econoline van. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact Investigator Stuart Herndon at 434-332-9514 or call Central Virginia Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
