LEESBURG, Va. – A Virginia judge will decide this week whether to impose a 74-year prison sentence that a jury set for a retired Army major who shot and wounded two sheriff’s deputies. Several jurors who convicted Douglas Vernon Johnson Jr., 54, told the Washington Post that they either believed they were giving him a lower sentence or wish they had the power to do so. The Loudoun County Circuit Court judge who is scheduled to sentence Johnson on Wednesday can reduce the jury’s punishment. Defense attorney Edward Ungvarsky is asking for a 20-year prison term. Five jurors signed affidavits for the defense saying they thought Johnson deserved a chance to be released earlier.

ASHBURN, Va. – A public school system in Virginia has apologized for its history of racial segregation and a more recent pattern of discriminating against Black students. The Washington Post reports that the Loudoun County Public Schools addressed its apology on Friday to the county’s Black community in a letter and video. The county fought a school desegregation order for more than a decade after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it illegal. Michelle Thomas, president of the local NAACP, questioned whether the apology is genuine. Rob Doolittle, a spokesman for the schools system, said the apology is only one step in the county’s plan to fight systemic racism.

WTOP reports that officials in northern Virginia's Loudoun County voted this week to return the statue of a Confederate soldier to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A new law in Virginia allows local governments to decide the fate of war monuments on their property. Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall, a Democrat, had long argued that the statue was a symbol of systemic racism. RICHMOND, Va. - Seven people died across Virginia in crashes that happened during Fourth of July weekend, according to Virginia State Police. The six fatal crashes happened in Highland, Loudoun, Lunenburg, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Spotsylvania counties. Two people died in the Spotsylvania County crash. During the holiday statistical counting period, Virginia State Police responded to a total 548 traffic crashes statewide and assisted 1,791 disabled/stranded motorists. State police measured the holiday weekend as beginning at 12:01 a.m. July 3 and ending at 12 a.m. July 5.
