The Local Office on Aging is fighting winter hunger by delivering emergency food bags packed with five easy meals to keep homebound seniors warm and well-fed when storms strike.

Winter weather poses significant risks for seniors, particularly those with Alzheimer's or dementia, highlighting the importance of community support and proactive caregiving strategies.

The Local Office on Aging is providing free Medicare Open Enrollment counseling to help seniors navigate their Medicare options from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2025.

On Tuesday morning, the Local Office on Aging and the Lewis Gale Medical Center Trauma Services will provide a free safety check to older drivers in the Roanoke Valley.

“I just think she wanted everyone to feel valued, and to feel like they had someone in their corner,” Susan William’s friend Amanda Charsha-Lindsey said.

The organization held its annual meeting virtually on Thursday to reflect on what they’ve been through during the pandemic and the needs still ahead. Despite COVID-19, they were able to deliver more than 88,000 meals for Meals on Wheels, coordinate medical care and provide transportation. During the meeting, the head of Virginia’s Department of Social Services, S. Duke Storen, said their work wouldn’t have been possible without those volunteers. AdWith an aging population, they said there needs to be a greater focus on nutrition and health, transportation and helping seniors stay physically and financially independent.

COVID-19 has kept many loved ones apart, especially those in nursing facilities.

Boyd said they are taking extra precautions to make sure seniors are served and volunteers are protected in the process.

ROANOKE, Va. - The Local Office on Aging (LOA) is asking for your help to continue serving seniors in the Roanoke Valley. As the organization celebrates one year in its new retrofitted facility, it's now trying to raise the money to pay for it.
