Tuesday night was a night to celebrate the arts in the Roanoke Valley as the 40th annual Perry F. Kendig Awards recognized leadership and support of the arts in the region.

10 News Anchors John Carlin and Rachel Lucas helped the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center raise money during it's annual Night Owl on the Town Gala at Hotel Roanoke. 2025 was a record breaking year for fundraising!

All proceeds support the Center’s mission of giving wildlife a second chance. The silent auction is now live and is open to the public to bid. You can view the auction here. Only attendees at the event will be eligible to bid on live auction items.

ROANOKE, Va. – The candidates to be Roanoke’s next mayor faced off in a virtual forum on Thursday. Roanoke’s current mayor, Sherman Lea, and Roanoke’s former mayor, David Bowers, met on a virtual stage ahead of the November 3 election. 10 News anchor John Carlin moderated the forum, which was hosted by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce. Bowers said he was against moving the bus station to the lot in front of the Virginia Museum of Transportation. He also criticized the current city council for failing to develop a proposal across I-581 from Valley View Mall.

You can drop off supplies today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sam’s Club on Wards Road in Lynchburg. The clinic runs from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Rockbridge Regional Communication Center in Buena Vista. In Craig County, there is a clinic starting at 4 p.m. at the Craig County Health Center. The New River Health District holds a drive-thru flu vaccine clinic today. The Virginia Board of Education will discuss amending its history and social science standards.

ROANOKE, Va. – Carilion Clinic closed its NICU Tuesday, so no one will be permitted to visit Carilion Children’s NICU. Dr. Kimberly Dunsmore, the chair of Carilion Children’s Hospital, said the purpose of the decision is to protect these vulnerable patients from any exposure to the coronavirus. The move is likely to cause anxiety and fear for NICU parents. Carilion Children’s NICU is working with mothers to continue to provide breast milk for their babies through a coordinated drop off program. Labor and delivery patients are allowed one visitor during their stay, including during the birth.

John is the recipient of five Emmy awards for reporting, as well as numerous awards from RTNDA, VAB and Associated Press. John is a graduate of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh with a degree in mass communication. He is a co-founder and board member for the Blue Ridge Marathon and a past board member of the Virginia chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

"2019 has been a journey for me the whole way," Carlin said. Carlin was healthy enough to participate in the Virginia's Blue Ridge Gran Fondo bike ride Sunday morning. More than 200 cyclists participated in the ride, which raised money and awareness for the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research. Carlin said he's fortunate to have had the strength to complete the course, which wound through the back roads of Botetourt County. "Two or three months ago, I didn't think I would be able to make this ride today," Carlin said.

ROANOKE, Va. - 10 News Anchor John Carlin opened up to the public in May about his ongoing battle with sarcoidosis. Among the positive thoughts, prayers and well wishes for Carlin, many have asked how they can help. Carlin is fundraising for the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research by riding in the Virginia's Blue Ridge Gran Fondo on October 13th. Carlin will bike along a scenic route in Botetourt County.
