He won the final with a new Olympic record of 20.7 seconds. This story was transmitted from the 1936 Berlin Olympics on the day of the 200-meter dash. The story by AP Sports Writer Alan Gould is reprinted here as it ran in The Los Angeles Times on Aug. 6, 1936, using the contemporary style. Capitalizing on ideal conditions, fourteen of the thirty-three starters bettered the former Olympic record of 4h.

Owens was a Black athlete at the 1936 Berlin Games who stole the show by winning four gold medals and dispelling the Nazi claims of Aryan supremacy. It started a friendship between Owens and Long so dear that generations later, their families remain close. There was Owens, the son of an Alabama sharecropper and Long, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed German, celebrating under the ever-looming presence of Hitler. Throughout his life, Owens was a popular figure in Berlin with German school kids sending him letters. Dortch went back to the Berlin stadium for the world track and field championships in 2009.

(AP Photo/File)The name of sprinter Mack Robinson may not be as well-known as Jesse Owens, the star of the 1936 Berlin Games. Robinson was part of a group of 18 Black athletes from the U.S. who combined for 14 medals in front of Adolf Hitler at the 1936 Games. NEAR BOYCOTTThe Berlin Games were almost boycotted by the U.S. and other nations over Germanys racist policies. The center from Texas led the Americans to a 19-8 win over Canada for the gold medal as men's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1936 Berlin Games. Laura Hillenbrand authored Unbroken, which featured Louis Zamperini who qualified for the U.S. team in the 5,000-meter race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
