A new grocery store named the “Market on Melrose” will help address food insecurity in Northwest Roanoke.

Goodwill needs clothing and household items, which it sells to fund services for the community like mentoring and job assistance programs. Goodwill Stores will be open for regular hours on New Year’s Eve to receive donations of clothing and household items. Donations postmarked by December 31, 2020, will receive a 2020 tax receipt.

ROANOKE, Va – A non-profit in Southwest Virginia received $10 million to help get people back to work. The massive donation by author and philanthropist Mackenzie Scott is the largest donation Goodwill Industries of the Valleys has ever received. As millions of Americans struggle with unemployment, Goodwill staff said the money is more important now than ever before. Goodwill Industries of the Valleys is headquartered in Roanoke but covers as far north as Rockingham County, down to the North Carolina border. In the past four months, Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has given away more than $4 billion.

Senator Mark Warner will hold a virtual meeting today, talking about the Supreme Court nomination. Today’s meeting comes one day before the Judiciary Committee votes on the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Warner will talk about what’s at stake for Americans who “could lose their health care coverage.” The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments next month. ROANOKE, Va. – The longtime leader of the local Goodwill district is calling it a career. Bruce Phipps is retiring after 18 years as president of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys. Phipps has worked for Goodwill for nearly 50 years. During his tenure in Roanoke, Goodwill converted an old K-Mart into its local headquarters and helped more than 30,000 people with job skills training. Phipps will remain president until next April while the company searches for a new leader.

ROANOKE, Va. – While Goodwill stores have closed their doors for shopping, they are open for accepting donations. To ensure workers safety, Goodwill is taking precautions, such as sanitizing and having employees wear gloves while dealing with donations. In 2016, another Purple Heart was accidentally donated to a Goodwill in Arizona and with the help of social media it was reunited with the service member's family in Missouri.

DANVILLE, Va. - Goodwill Industries of South Central Virginia is filing for bankruptcy, hoping to merge with other area Goodwills. The organization covers stores at its base of operations in Danville and also in Pittsylvania and Halifax counties. A statement posted to its website said its provided services for 46 years, but after going through a difficult few years its now hoping to merge with other area Goodwills.
