Virginia Tech has fired football coach Brent Pry after the program stumbled to its first 0-3 start since 1987.

Vicari Swain returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown to break open a close game, LaNorris Sellers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Nyck Harbor, and No. 13 South Carolina beat Virginia Tech 24-11 in the opener for both teams.

On Sunday, Virginia Tech took on South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium. Despite losing a tough game, Hokie fans showed out at bars around the Roanoke and New River Valleys.

Former longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer showed up for the Hokies’ season opener on Sunday against South Carolina, which is coached by son Shane Beamer, wearing Gamecocks black.

“He’s definitely on his own path,” Frank said.

Beamer’s 25 in downtown Roanoke is permanently closing its doors.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina has made it official, hiring ex-assistant Shane Beamer as its head football coach. The son of longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer takes over for Will Muschamp, who was fired last month with three games left in the season. Beamer spent four seasons as a South Carolina assistant under Steve Spurrier from 2007-10. Beamer also worked for his father at Virginia Tech, Kirby Smart at Georgia and, for the past three seasons, Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma. With the Sooners, Beamer worked with teams that have made the past three College Football Playoffs.

NC State’s visit to Lane stadium will include a bittersweet homecoming for a member of there coaching staff. Assistant Charley Wiles spent 24 years alongside Bud Foster, and another two as a grad assistant under head coach Frank Beamer. But he’ll enter Lane stadium Saturday wearing the visiting Wolfpack colors. Wiles played for Coach Frank Beamer at Murray State as well. NC State at Virginia tech is set to kick off at 8 p.m. from Lane Stadium.

On the ballot in Halifax County is a question about how it should pay for the construction or renovation of its high school. The ballot will ask for a yes or no vote for a sales tax increase of no more than 1%. Unlike the sales tax, which would pull in money from people who don't live there, property taxes only affect residents. "I think the sales tax is fair for everybody because everybody will pay their fair share towards the new high school, and we definitely need a new high school," Halifax County resident Jesse Spencer said. It makes more sense to spread the money over a lot of people rather than a few," Halifax County resident Robin Yates said.

After the 2019 season, longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster will retire from coaching. He'll be leading Team Makai in the 2020 Polynesian Bowl in Oahu, Hawaii, on Jan. 18, 2020. The Polynesian Bowl is an annual all-star game featuring 100 of the nation’s top senior high school football players. Beamer, of course, served as the head coach for Virginia Tech football, for 29 seasons until his retirement in 2015. He is the winningest coach in Tech history and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018. “The Polynesian Bowl is an incredible celebration of culture and football,” said Beamer.

RADFORD, VA – Saturday was a day full of pride at Radford University, where more than 1,800 students graduated. "It's exciting to be ready to move on to the next step, and figure out what's going on with my life," said Tom Brady, graduate of Radford University. "I don't really know what else to say, because a lot of people have a dream to travel the world, and honestly mine was to graduate college," said Elonna Wright, graduate of Radford University. One of the main highlights to this year's ceremony was the commencement speaker, Radford University alumnus and former Virginia Tech Football Coach, Frank Beamer. "I like that he talked about like how there's going to be a mountain and to keep climbing and not like let other people get the best of you," said Alexa Ward, graduate of Radford University.

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10)- The Hokies have filled their vacant wide receivers coaching position by hiring Virginia native Zohn Burden. The VMI graduate joins the Virginia Tech Football program from Old Dominion, serving on the Monarchs squad for the past three seasons as passing coordinator. "We are excited to welcome Coach Burden and his family into the Hokie Nation," Coach Frank Beamer said in a release from the Virginia Tech Athletic department. "We appreciate the efforts of Coach Burden with our football program. Zohn helped start our program back in 2007 as one of the original staff members," says ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder through the ODU Athletic department.
