With Father’s Day coming up, it got us thinking about dads and advice: What’s the best lesson you ever learned from your father, or a father figure in your life?

Life wouldn’t be the same without our dads, right?

Just like a smell can take us back to a place in time, there are words that will forever be associated with people we love.

If there’s anything we learned when we asked dads what they really want for Father’s Day, it’s that, often, expensive gifts aren't necessarily it.

Just like in 84 countries around the world, Father’s Day is celebrated in the United States the third Sunday of every June.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A death investigation is underway after police found two Roanoke Valley men dead inside a pickup truck in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Wednesday night. The 2007 Chevy Silverado had been parked in the same place since Father’s Day, according to the man who called 911. Police found 29-year-old Frank Arnold Jr. and 23-year-old John Keaton dead inside the truck, according to the police report. Police are investigating this incident as a death investigation and a drug overdose. Horry County, South Carolina Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler told 10 News that there is no foul play in the two deaths.

ROANOKE, Va. Fathers Day is a few days away, but many traditions will change this year because of COVID-19. Social distancing inspired a Roanoke assisted living facility to do something special for its residents Friday morning. Friendship organized a drive-thru parade for its residents, since visitors are still not allowed inside of the facility. Loved ones drove around the building while waving to loved ones stationed on the curb. The facility had previously organized a similar parade for Mothers Day.

It’s been an interesting year, and although some of the country is reopening, many people are still staying home to stay safe. For those who are stumped about what kind of gift to buy for Father’s Day, maybe one suggestion that could help is this: Start with what not to buy for the occasion. Coupon Lawn surveyed more than 1,000 fathers in the United States to see what their most unwanted gifts were for Father’s Day. The survey found that 46% of people buy clothes as Father’s Day gifts. The responses found that 30% of fathers dislike receiving these, even though 59% of people who get gifts on Father’s Day buy cards. Coupon Lawn said as part of its survey that $5.3 billion is spent on unwanted Father’s Day gifts, although that is half of the $10.5 billion the site said is spent on unwanted Mother’s Day gifts.

ROANOKE, Va. Fathers Day is just a few short days away but theres a local program that celebrates fatherhood 365 days a year. Fathers First is a 10-week program through Total Action for Progress (TAP) on discipline, communication, parenting and handling emotion in healthier ways. That, along with the pandemic becoming a parenting lesson itself, is why they decided to move on with the class virtually. Ed Hrinya, fatherhood development specialist for First Fathers said he wants to help give local fathers the tools they need to handle conversations like that. So really giving our parents the tools they need to help their children during this time is very important, said Hrinya.

SALEM, Va. For Fathers Day this year, some dads are teaming up with a Salem brewery to raise money for Feeding Southwest Virginia. Originally, for every four-pack of beer bought from Olde Salem Brewing Company between Thursday and Sunday the group of dads planned to donate $3 to the food bank. Head Brewer Kevin Campbell said hes never done anything like this before but hes happy to help. We were going to invite them in and brew beer for Fathers Day, but with the pandemic going on we couldnt do that. If 150 four-packs are bought by Sunday, the dads will donate and extra $50.

Grilling is about as synonymous with Father’s Day as the month of June, so you have to imagine that many, many grills will be fired up around the country.

While restaurant reservation books are usually filled for Mother’s Day, there traditionally isn’t as much ink required for those same books on Father’s Day, according to one website. Father’s Day does see an uptick for restaurant activity, according to Womply, which said the holiday brings in 22% more revenue for restaurants. In fact, only 29% of fathers surveyed said they wanted to be taken out to eat on Father’s Day, according to Zagat. While they’re happy to spoil mothers on their special day and spend money at a restaurant, many fathers said they’d prefer to keep some money in the bank, Father’s Day or no Father’s Day. Cooking up some burgers or hot dogs is a joy for many fathers, and Father’s Day provides a great excuse to do exactly that.
