Downtown Wytheville marked its national recognition as the best main street community in the country with a walking tour Tuesday, showing off the businesses, living spaces and people behind the small Virginia town’s remarkable turnaround.
Wytheville has won the 2026 Great American Main Street Award, claiming the top honor among the best Main Street communities in the country. The small Southwest Virginia town beat out much larger cities, including Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Astoria, Oregon — defeating competitors up to 50 times its size. Out of eight semifinalists, Wytheville was the second smallest.
Wytheville’s Main Street was among the top 8 Main Street Communities nationally. This was spearheaded by Downtown Wytheville Inc. who have helped reinvigorate the area since it was founded in 2014.
Downtown Wytheville Inc. announced that it had been named as a semifinalist for the 2026 Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA).
