Danville Public Schools are all virtual starting today after multiple positive coronavirus cases. The Christiansburg man who was wanted for murdering a man in Salem and carjacking someone else in Blacksburg will be in court today. Zane Christian will be arraigned in Salem General District Court at 8:30 for the shooting. The Vinton Library reopens today. DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Public Schools announced classes will temporarily switch to virtual learning due to an increase in positive coronavirus cases and a potential surge in cases after Thanksgiving. According to interim superintendent Dr. Cathy Magouyrk, all students will return to virtual learning the week after Thanksgiving starting on Monday, Nov. 30 through Friday, Dec. 4. Magouyrk said students will return to face-to-face instruction Monday, Dec. 7, unless otherwise notified. Normal operating hours and procedures for staff and students will continue Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24. This switch comes after DPS had seven positive cases and 14 exposures since last Wednesday.

DANVILLE, Va. – One person has been diagnosed with coronavirus at Galileo Magnet High School on Wednesday. Danville Public Schools said Billy Chaney, the school district’s pandemic coordinator, began contact tracing immediately and identified any exposures within DPS. Officials said all parents and staff at the school have been notified. The school will continue normal school operating hours as officials said the incident is contained.

DANVILLE, Va. – It’s a three-day weekend for students, teachers and school staff in Danville. Danville Public Schools announced Thursday that all schools will be closed and there will be no virtual learning on Friday. Currently, the Dan River is expected to crest at 29.9 feet at 1 a.m. and remain in moderate flood stage until about 7 p.m. When the river crests, many streets will be closed throughout the city and surrounding area, according to city officials. School employees are to follow Code 1, meaning all sites are closed and no employees should report to work.

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville Public Schools appointed its next superintendent during Thursday’s school board meeting. She has over 30 years of experience working in public education, but much of her earlier career was spent as a math teacher, assistant principal and principal at Danville Public Schools. “I am honored to be selected as the next superintendent of Danville Public Schools,” said Hairston. Rumors have been rampant on social media Tuesday that Virginia’s public schools are closing again; however, schools are NOT closing. We have received phone calls and messages about this rumor, so we wanted to set the record straight. On Tuesday afternoon, a Virginia TV news station an old article on its website from the spring when Northam did close schools. The quote used in the station’s article came from Northam’s statement on March 13, 2020. In looking to counter this false information, Danville Public Schools took to its Facebook page to address it:

Danville:A student at George Washington High School has tested positive for coronavirus. The student has been participating in virtual learning and has not been on school property since Aug. 20. DANVILLE, Va. The search for a new school superintendent in Danville will include input from staff and the community. In a statement to 10 News, the school board chairwoman said the board is committed to gathering that input. As 10 News reported Thursday, Superintendent Dr. Stan Jones has resigned and the school board is giving him one years salary plus benefits, which totals about $200,000. In a statement, Jones did not say specifically why he resigned but did say he was reluctant. The school board chairwoman said Jones always supported and advocated for employees and has been a true champion for doing what is right.

DANVILLE, Va. - One local partnership is expanding to make sure that every child has access to free, healthy meals after school. Danville Public Schools and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are expanding food truck services to provide dinner meals in select neighborhoods. Currently, after-school meals are provided at certain schools, but the food truck component removes the transportation barrier and brings food directly to kids' neighborhoods. DANVILLE, Va. - Emergency buckets are helping give students and teachers in Danville some peace of mind. All Danville Public Schools teachers have had a bucket for about a week now, thanks to Gods Pit Crew. Galileo High School English teacher Michelle Larking said theyve been especially helpful for students since the active shooter drill there Oct. 11. As soon as the buckets came, they asked us, Whats in the buckets? We opened the buckets and went through and showed them, and they were relieved that we had those things," Larking said. They were getting very creative and thinking, What can we use as a tourniquet if we didnt have one?A grant from the Womack Foundation allowed Gods Pit Crew to provide the buckets.

Danville Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Stan Jones is responding to criticism after the state Department of Education report noted that two Danville schools lost their full accreditation, leaving only two of 11 schools fully accredited in the system. The division said it was no surprise when the state removed full accreditation for two schools, leaving Forest Hills and Galileo Magnet as the only two fully accredited schools in the system. The superintendent argued the accreditation process overall is flawed and that it's more of a political metric than a scholastic one. And he said the other nine schools accredited with conditions don't mean failure. Jones added that he believes the accreditation process is deeply flawed and he predicts that in a decade the accreditation process as we know it will no longer be used.

DANVILLE, Va. - Danville Public Schools' superintendent is making a plea to the state for help. He has sent a letter to the state school's superintendent of public instruction asking for a "division-level academic review" of the school district. According a news release from the district, the request was made based on the district's most recent SOL scores and anticipated accreditation ratings. DANVILLE, Va. - Danville Public Schools' food truck is proving to be very successful. The school district started using a food truck at the beginning of summer to feed students. Danville Public Schools Nutrition Director Phillip Gardner said he plans to keep using it throughout the school year. "If I'm out in public, if I see a parent or I see a child, they tell me how much they love the food truck. He hopes to expand the food truck service in the future.
