CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Sleep in Heavenly Peace New River Valley now has more beds to give, thanks to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Dozens of cadets constructed the beds on Saturday along with Sleep in Heavenly Peace volunteers. Chapter president Paul Mele said these new beds are enough for everyone on its waiting list. “As future military leaders, it’s important for cadets to give back to their communities and take part in service.”Mele has more builds planned for the spring and summer, but he said this build is especially significant as a Virginia Tech alum. 1996: The Supreme Court of the United States orders the Virginia Military Institute to admit women or forgo state support. The board of the all-male military college would vote 8-7 in September 1996 to admit women. The school, which officially enrolled its first female cadets in August 1997, was the last U.S. military college to admit women. A spike in coronavirus cases among the Corps of Cadets has prompted Virginia Military Institute officials to put additional restrictions in place, according to a letter from the school’s interim superintendent. Our goal is to provide the Corps of Cadets with a VMI experience that is as normal as possible.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech’s Corps of Cadets continued its somber Veterans Day tradition this year. Two cadets started standing watch at the university’s War Memorial at midnight on Veterans Day. The cadets change shifts every hour, with cadets continually guarding the Pylons for 48 hours. He said the experience was humbling, especially being surrounded by the names of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni killed in the line of duty. The solemn nature of it.”According to the Corps of Cadets, the tradition dates back to the 1980s.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech cadets finished an annual tradition Saturday morning, although it took longer to finish than usual because of COVID-19. Corps of Cadets members typically complete the Caldwell March, a 26-mile trek through Blacksburg, in the fall and spring of their freshman year. “We’re asking them to be something greater than most students," said Maj. Gen. Randal Fullhart, Virginia Tech’s commandant of cadets. 'It’s a long year, but we earned it.’”The Caldwell March is named for Addison Caldwell, who is regarded as the first Virginia Tech student. The Corps of Cadets Class of 2024 has already completed the first half of their Caldwell March.

The Army-Navy football game in December has been moved from Philadelphia to West Point because of attendance limits placed on outdoor events in Pennsylvania. By playing the game on Army's home field in New York, the entire Brigade of Midshipmen and Corps of Cadets will be able to attend. This will be the first time the Army-Navy game will be played at a home site since Army hosted the event in 1943 during World War II. Army athletic director Mike Buddie thanked the city of Philadelphia, the Eagles and all those involved in the planning. “We are excited about this historic opportunity.”It is unlikely fans will be allowed at Michie Stadium beyond the Corps of Cadets and Brigade of Midshipmen.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The annual Veterans Day remembrance ceremony was held Monday morning on Virginia Tech's campus. It was a solemn day on Virginia Tech's campus as students, staff and community members honored our country's veterans. U.S. Army veterans Jessica Pharis and Nicole Akers said that Veterans Day means something different to each of them. "I really appreciate getting to celebrate Veterans Day and just to invest in the next generation as they continue their journey," Akers said. Cadets stood guard for 24 hours at the Pylons and the Rock, a memorial to Virginia Tech alumni lost in World War I.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech is going big to honor an alumna who died. Sarah Mitchell, a 2017 graduate of Virginia Tech and the Corps of Cadets, died in July 2018 during a Navy training exercise in the Red Sea. Mitchell will be featured on the Virginia Tech Class of 2021 ring. Virginia Tech revealed the design this week. A section of the ring memorializes Mitchell, complete with "S.M."
