LYNCHBURG, Va. Central Virginia Community College wants to break barriers for students starting up classes again during the pandemic. Later this month, CVCC will loan about 280 laptops to students with device or internet access issues. Many were trying to do homework through their smart phones and we just realized there was a barrier to student success. So immediately we want to make sure we can sort of eliminate that barrier, said Chris Bryant, vice president of institutional advancement. Come be able to check it out a book and take it, use it for the entire semester, said Biff Johnson, president of Central Virginia Education Foundation Board.

The 17-year-old Heritage High School senior and his twin have family flying all the way in from California to watch them graduate. But right after winter break, school district officials told Heritage High School and E.C. Glass High School students they couldn’t have graduation at Liberty University’s Vines Center because it would be under construction at that time. Both high schools already use City Stadium for football games, Coleman thought, why not have graduation there? The change to City Stadium marks the third time the venue for the two graduation ceremonies has changed since late last year.

Martinsville City Council will meet today to consider reversion to town status. If Martinsville reverts to a town, it would mean certain financial responsibilities would fall on the county. More than 100 Central Virginia Community College students helped build Florence Coles' Habitat for Humanity home Saturday morning. Coles said she had been waiting six years for the Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity to approve her application. The house will soon be moved to storage, and Habitat for Humanity estimates Coles' house will not be finished until next spring. "Our students care about their community," said Mary Zoccola, of Central Virginia Community College. "When they heard this house was going to be for someone in the community, that just touched everyone's heart."

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Central Virginia Community College is offering help to single working parents looking to get back into school, but unable to commit to two years. School leaders say a program called FastForward will help make that happen. We've got clinical medical assistant programs we've got phlebotomy. CVCC will also develop new FastForward programs in fall 2019.
