Centra Lynchburg General Hospital officially broke ground Thursday on a $140 million hospital tower.  It marks the largest healthcare construction project in Centra Health’s nearly 40-year history. The six-story tower expansion is a part of Centra’s long-term Modernization Plan.

Lynchburg drivers are being asked to avoid the area of Thomson Drive and Tate Springs Road near Centra Hospital due to down power lines in the area.

Heather Mayberry is a clinical nurse specialist at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital – and now she’s a nurse of the year. Mayberry is one of 20 being recognized by the Virginia Nurses Association for their frontline work during the pandemic. ROANOKE, Va – This week, the United States has broken an all-time record of patients hospitalized for COVID-19. While health systems here in our region have the capacity to treat those patients, an expected increase in cases could change that. Including Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, which had to dedicate another floor for a record number of COVID-19 patients. Despite the rise, health care workers want people to go to the hospital if they are in need of medical attention. And so we needed to get some additional capacity for storage of bodies,” Ballad Health CEO Alan Levine said.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A two-vehicle crash in Lynchburg on Wednesday left one person dead and another seriously hurt. 28-year-old Paris Carta, of Lynchburg, died from her injuries, according to the Lynchburg Police Department. Another person was taken to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital with “significant” injuries. A passenger in the car was taken to the hospital with “serious” injuries according to police. Police said the driver of the utility truck wasn’t hurt.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Centra updated its current visitation restrictions to allow one visitor per patient. The change goes into effect at 6 p.m. on Friday. Under the loosened restrictions, visitors:Must be 18 or olderWill only be allowed if they do not have COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath)Will be screened each time they enter and will be asked a series of questions and have their temperature checkedMust wear a mask while in any buildingShould limit going in and out of care areas and buildingsWill be expected to practice social distancing

In just two weeks, leaders at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital have seen a 96% increase in positive COVID-19 cases. On Wednesday, Centra leaders said there are 34 patients with the virus. The COVID has ravished his lungs so much that he really cant use his lungs, so much that he really cant use them currently anymore to oxygenate. Centra added that for the first time in months, the Centra Southside Community Hospital hospital saw no COVID-19 positive patients. In Lynchburg, Centra leaders said the Virginia Department of Health is having a hard time getting people to answer questions.

LYNCHBURG, Va. Centra officials in Lynchburg are seeing a surge in coronavirus patients. Last week, they had 20 people on the COVID-19 floor at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. There are 15 people in the hospital right now, eight of whom are in intensive care unit. Approved visitors as well as outpatients with scheduled appointments will be screened for symptoms and temperature prior to entry.
