BLACKSBURG, Va. โ€“ Feeling left out of the school return conversation, two Blacksburg High School seniors collected their own data through an online survey. Looking for input, Lauren Collver and Molly McPherson asked students how they felt about leaving the hybrid learning model. After receiving nearly 270 responses in a few days, almost 75% said they do not want to switch to fully in-person learning. About 1,200 students attend the high school. Based on the written responses, Collver said most students are worried about switching so late in the year when the school year is almost over.

A group of local parents concerned their kids wont be getting enough instructional time because of a delayed start to the school year is asking for community support in trying to get the school start date moved up. Blacksburg High School parents Kelly Stulce and Mike Fisher said with school starting on September 8, seniors will only get about half the instructional time for their AP courses before they have to take exams in May. Stulce, Fisher and others are working on a petition, but in the meantime they ask everybody to call or email Montgomery Countys School Board members and ask that high schools in the county start on Aug. 13My son is in four advanced placement and two dual enrollment classes and is very, very concerned, Fisher said. Its also a challenge balancing and trying to manage that increased workload with college application deadlines, scholarship deadlines, trying to prepare for the next phase of life, Stulce said. On Friday, 10 News reached out to the chair and vice chair of the school board, but did not get a response.

Montgomery County School Board members could vote Tuesday night to allow students take days off school for mental health reasons. Some Blacksburg High School students led the push for change. They feel Montgomery County students should be able to have an excused absence for mental health reasons, just like when they're physically sick. Blacksburg High School students chanted passionately as they walked to the Drillfield to join others for the event. "I think that it's really important that everyone is aware of what's going on and the urgency of the situation," Blacksburg High School senior Carson Hopkins said. "Every generation that they have to face head-on and that they have to fight together, and I think climate change is our issue," Blacksburg High School senior Christian Shushok said. It's all part of a new student driven program addressing the mental health needs of young adults. That's why Montgomery County School administrators and students want to make it easier, and less stigmatizing, to get mental health care. "In March, I felt as if there was a large injustice committed in our county," student Carson Hopkins said.
