ROANOKE, Va. – Carilion Clinic is hitting another major milestone in the battle against COVID-19. On Wednesday, the health system helped administer its 100,000th dose of the vaccine and 98-year-old June Rutherfoord was the lucky recipient. Rutherfoord, a former nurse, said she’s thankful for the scientists who made it possible to get the vaccine. “Well I’m very thankful we have wonderful scientists who work out all these things to control the evil that’s in the world, thank you all,” Rutherfoord said. Vaccine distribution is expected to pick up at the Berglund Center and other sites across the region through the rest of the week.

ROANOKE, Va – As COVID-19 vaccine supply increases across the Roanoke Valley, Congressman Ben Cline paid a visit to one of the largest vaccination sites in the region. Hundreds and sometimes thousands of people get vaccinated here at the Berglund Center almost every day. “We’ve got folks from all over the community working together to make sure that everybody wants to get vaccinated,” Cline said. The Republican congressman spent Wednesday afternoon looking at operations and thanking volunteers for their time. Cline says the choice to get vaccinated is still personal, but he hopes to act as an example because it will help reopen the economy and protect the community.

Ralph Northam recently loosened COVID-19 restrictions for outdoor high school sporting events, some Virginia Congressmen feel they’re still too restrictive. He also pushed for Northam to follow CDC’s 6-foot distancing guidelines instead of 10 feet that’s currently in Executive Order 72. AdThe order currently allows outdoor high school sports to have 30% of the occupancy load or a maximum of 250 spectators per field. “Governor Northam’s decision to require 10-foot distancing and allow no more than 250 fans at an outdoor stadium that potentially holds thousands is insufficient. Earlier this week northside high school had to suspend all activities after members of the football program tested positive.

RICHMOND, Va. – Some of Virginia’s most notable athletes took a virtual trip to the Capitol Wednesday morning. Special Olympics Virginia representatives talked with state lawmakers about why their organization deserves funding. The speakers included Matt Crowder, a Special Olympian from Roanoke who spoke with Rep. Ben Cline. Crowder believes the organization has changed his life and will continue to do the same for others in his position. “It’s taught me to be responsible, it’s taught me how to be part of a team,” Crowder said.

ROANOKE, Va. – A Southwest Virginia congressman’s vote against the Electoral College results Wednesday inspired a small group of Roanoke protesters to demonstrate against him. A gathering of about 20 people marched from Elmwood Park to Rep. Ben Cline’s Roanoke office Thursday morning. The group planned to talk to people at his office, but were unable to do so. Demonstrators said the protest came together spontaneously after watching the vote and the siege at the U.S. Capitol. “I’m furious,” said Brienne Nida, who traveled down from Botetourt County for the demonstration.

ROANOKE, Va. – After a late night, controversial vote of 52-48 in the Senate, Amy Coney Barrett has officially been sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice. The confirmation of Barrett is not only a topic of debate at the Capitol but across the Commonwealth as well. It was the closest vote in decades and experts believe this will be the most conservative court since World War II. Monday night, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine voted against Barrett’s confirmation and said Republicans broke their promise by proceeding with it. I am ecstatic that a principled, female conservative now sits on the High Court, and I wish Justice Barrett the best of luck on this new endeavor.”

LEXINGTON, Va. – Nicholas Betts is a political outsider, but he believes that perspective makes him the perfect person to represent Virginia’s 6th Congressional District. The Democrat is running to unseat incumbent Rep. Ben Cline in the district that extends up Interstate 81 from Roanoke to Front Royal. Betts faces a steep challenge in the 6th District as voters haven’t elected a Democrat since 1990, when the late Jim Olin won his fifth term in Congress. Despite the obstacles, Betts believes he has what it takes to unite both the urban and rural areas within district. “Bridging that gap is just getting out, doing the work, and listening to what people have to say," Betts said.

ROANOKE, Va. – Rep. Ben Cline wants two more years to represent Roanoke, Lynchburg, and the rest of Virginia’s 6th district in Congress. Cline even served as a member of Goodlatte’s legislative staff in 1994 and ultimately serving as the congressman’s chief of staff. “It’s making sure we can get a vaccine, making sure we save lives, and getting the economy moving again,” Cline said. He also hopes to get federal funding for the improvement of Interstate 81, which runs through the majority of the 6th district. Cline said those politics have disillusioned some of the voters in the district he talked with, but he hopes to set a bipartisan example with a second term.

ROANOKE, Va. – Dozens of people gathered in Roanoke on Tuesday for a “Back the Blue” rally. Two Republican Roanoke City Council candidates, Peg McGuire and Maynard Keller, teamed up with Virginia Republican Senate candidate Daniel Gade and Congressman Ben Cline to show their support for local law enforcement. The event was held outside SafeSide Tactical where speakers talked about the importance of supporting police officers, not defunding them. This event comes as the General Assembly holds a special session in Richmond focusing on police reform. There was also a voter registration booth at the event.

During a Thursday night meeting, the Lexington City Council voted unanimously, 6-0, to change the name of Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. I suppose they’ll rename it something like ‘Lexington Cemetery: Now with Surprise Inside!' On April 1, 1949, the cemetery was conveyed to the city by the Lexington Presbyterian Church, according to City Manager Jim Halasz. On May 5 of that year, the council approved an ordinance accepting the conveyance, trust and naming the cemetery as the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. The city council, which met until 1:30 a.m. Friday said it will now take online input from city residents for possible new names.

ROANOKE, Va. – A state delegate is calling on the federal government to take action ahead of the federal and state unemployment funds running out of money. Sam Rasoul, who represents Virginia’s 11th District, which covers part of the city of Roanoke, believes the federal government should put hundreds of billions of dollars into the funds. Otherwise, businesses will see a huge increase in their unemployment tax in order to replenish them. He said the state is paying about $90 million in unemployment claims a week as of Monday because of the coronavirus. On Monday, 10 News also reached out to Congressman Ben Cline for comment but he was unavailable.

BEDFORD, Va. - Republican Congressmen Denver Riggleman and Ben Cline hosted a joint town hall in Bedford Wednesday night. A crowd of more than 100 people filled the room at Central Virginia Community College in Bedford Wednesday for the event. Cline of the 6th District and Riggleman of the 5th District split the county. "Voters in this area are not as concerned about impeachment as they are concerned about, infrastructure, drugs and crime and immigration," Cline said. As questions continue about President Donald Trump's actions with foreign governments, both Republicans said they continue to back the President.
