ROANOKE, Va. – Carilion Clinic is hitting another major milestone in the battle against COVID-19. On Wednesday, the health system helped administer its 100,000th dose of the vaccine and 98-year-old June Rutherfoord was the lucky recipient. Rutherfoord, a former nurse, said she’s thankful for the scientists who made it possible to get the vaccine. “Well I’m very thankful we have wonderful scientists who work out all these things to control the evil that’s in the world, thank you all,” Rutherfoord said. Vaccine distribution is expected to pick up at the Berglund Center and other sites across the region through the rest of the week.

The confirmation of Barrett is not only a topic of debate at the Capitol but across the Commonwealth as well. It was the closest vote in decades and experts believe this will be the most conservative court since World War II. Monday night, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine voted against Barrett’s confirmation and said Republicans broke their promise by proceeding with it. I am ecstatic that a principled, female conservative now sits on the High Court, and I wish Justice Barrett the best of luck on this new endeavor.”

Betts faces a steep challenge in the 6th District as voters haven’t elected a Democrat since 1990, when the late Jim Olin won his fifth term in Congress. Despite the obstacles, Betts believes he has what it takes to unite both the urban and rural areas within district. “Bridging that gap is just getting out, doing the work, and listening to what people have to say," Betts said.

ROANOKE, Va. – Rep. Ben Cline wants two more years to represent Roanoke, Lynchburg, and the rest of Virginia’s 6th district in Congress. Cline even served as a member of Goodlatte’s legislative staff in 1994 and ultimately serving as the congressman’s chief of staff. “It’s making sure we can get a vaccine, making sure we save lives, and getting the economy moving again,” Cline said. He also hopes to get federal funding for the improvement of Interstate 81, which runs through the majority of the 6th district. Cline said those politics have disillusioned some of the voters in the district he talked with, but he hopes to set a bipartisan example with a second term.

The event was held outside SafeSide Tactical where speakers talked about the importance of supporting police officers, not defunding them. During a Thursday night meeting, the Lexington City Council voted unanimously, 6-0, to change the name of Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. I suppose they’ll rename it something like ‘Lexington Cemetery: Now with Surprise Inside!' On April 1, 1949, the cemetery was conveyed to the city by the Lexington Presbyterian Church, according to City Manager Jim Halasz. On May 5 of that year, the council approved an ordinance accepting the conveyance, trust and naming the cemetery as the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. The city council, which met until 1:30 a.m. Friday said it will now take online input from city residents for possible new names.

Sam Rasoul, who represents Virginia’s 11th District, which covers part of the city of Roanoke, believes the federal government should put hundreds of billions of dollars into the funds. Otherwise, businesses will see a huge increase in their unemployment tax in order to replenish them. He said the state is paying about $90 million in unemployment claims a week as of Monday because of the coronavirus.
