VSP said six tractor-trailers, three passenger vehicles, and a medical transport van with no patient on board were involved in the crash, which occurred around 5:08 p.m. on Thursday.

Authorities found that heavy rain may have had to do with the crash. Multiple vehicles were slowing due to a nearby two-vehicle crash, and vehicles began rear-ending one another, blocking the roadway.

Police said there were multiple non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. One man, identified as 36-year-old Abdiqadir Ahmed Nur, died after his vehicle ran into several tractor-trailers during the incident.

VSP said a helicopter arrived on scene to take the driver of the medical transport vehicle to a Roanoke hospital, but was unable to return to Roanoke due to heavy rain. The driver was taken to Rockbridge Community Hospital by ground.

VDOT set up detours to reroute traffic from the crash. Multiple fuel spills were reported from the tractor-trailers.
