WATCH: Bedford Town Council votes against name change Tuesday night

BEDFORD, Va. – The Bedford Town Council met Tuesday night to discuss, among other things, changing the town’s name to Liberty.

The change was brought up by Vice Mayor Darryl Updike as a way to breathe new life into the town.

Mayor Stanley was against the proposal, saying changing the name would erase the history of the area.

“There is a lot of history in this community that I’m not gonna give up — it is a lot that we can be proud of — the name Bedford to me carries a lot of weight,” Stanley said.

The council unanimously decided not to change the name due to the expenses that come with changing sign names and a lack of real benefit for Bedford.
