The intersection of Fifth Street and Commerce Street in Lynchburg will be closed for 10 days as work continues on the John Lynch Memorial Bridge Repair Project.
Drivers heading west on Fifth Street will not be able to turn left onto Commerce Street, and those traveling on Commerce Street will be unable to turn left onto Fifth Street. A detour will direct traffic to Main Street and Seventh Street.

Drivers are urged to use caution when driving through the work zone, watch for changes in traffic patterns and follow posted signage. Emergency vehicles will have access at all times.
The John Lynch Memorial Bridge Repair Project started in January 2025 and is expected to be completed by spring 2026. The project, which covers the entire bridge over the James River, will address several critical repairs. These include reconstructing expansion joints, replacing deteriorated raised concrete medians and repairing the substructure.
