A ‘potential threat’ has prompted the closure of both Virginia State University and Hampton University.
Virginia State University sent an email to students and staff about a potential threat on campus, prompting a lockdown until further notice. Around noon, the university provided an update, saying no injuries or incidents have been reported related to the threat. Officials said meals will be provided to students living in VSU-managed housing. Students will receive detailed instructions in a separate email. All afternoon classes and extracurricular activities are canceled.

“We ask all members of the VSU community to remain vigilant--if you see something, say something. Suspicious or criminal activity should be reported immediately to the VSU Police Department at 804-524-5411,” the university said.
In addition to this, Hampton University also announced that all campus activities and classes are canceled Thursday, Sept. 11, and Friday, Sept. 12, including all athletic events.
“All students on campus are encouraged to minimize their movement across campus except for essential activities. Students residing off-campus should not come to campus at this time. All non-essential personnel, including faculty and staff, should evacuate campus immediately. Enhanced security measures are now in effect across campus,” the university said in a Facebook post.
At this time, details surrounding the nature of the threats remain unclear. Given the distance between the two campuses, the threats appear to be separate.
