ROANOKE, Va. – Local schools districts are responding to the latest restrictions from the VHSL on high school sports. The VHSL said that athletes should wear masks while playing, and if they can’t, they shouldn’t play. William Byrd High School Athletic Director Jason Taylor said that athletes already wear masks while practicing and everyone will do what it takes, but he’d like more guidance about what kind of masks the students need to wear. “Whatever VHSL puts together, whatever the governor puts together, our kids want to play, we’re going to abide by those rules,” said Taylor. Due to a new cap on spectators at 25 people, schools in Franklin County are not allowing fans to attend games.

VINTON, Va.- - Leaders from Roanoke County and the town of Vinton celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated historic William Byrd High School. A ribbon-cutting Thursday officially opened the three-story building as Billy Byrd Apartments. The nearly $12 million investment brings more than 80 new apartments to the community. Many elements of the original building were including in the renovations, including repurposing old bleachers into bookcases, keeping chalk boards wherever possible and preserving the gymnasium floor. After the ribbon-cutting, people were able to tour the building.

VINTON, Va.- - After $11 million in costs later and almost two years of work, the former William Byrd High School is called Billy Byrd Apartments. It's now called Billy Byrd Apartments. Dave McCormack of Waukeshaw Development converted the classrooms into 83 apartments. He says the small town feel and yet urban setting of Vinton will attract all kinds of tenants. Ten of the 83 units have already been rented at Billy Byrd.
