Bob Craighead joined the Marines at just 16 years old, and on this Veterans Day in 2020, decades later, he hasnโ€™t forgotten. He fought in Iwo Jima, coming home from the Pacific with a Purple Heart, just one of the few in his unit to survive. โ€œI am sure am proud of the fact that I enlisted in the Marine Corps and I thoroughly enjoyed that," Craighead said.

Organizers hoped things would change by the fall; however, with the continued spread of the virus, they knew they had to make a change. โ€œAs we go into this different year, weโ€™ve all had to sacrifice and we realize now the sacrifices theyโ€™ve made for our country and hopefully as we have a celebratory event this year theyโ€™ll realize that weโ€™re still thinking about them,โ€ said Jeff Perkins, Boxley Materials Company president and planning committee member. Local elementary students paid tribute in songs, while high school students brought in the flags. So really, I think we need to be paying tribute to those who died in the training and preparation as on that first day of combat," Caddick-Adams said.
