SALEM, Va. – Wednesday was Veterans Day, the day we as a nation give thanks to those who serve. In Salem, there’s one World War II veteran still spending his days on his front porch overlooking the mountain views. Bob Craighead joined the Marines at just 16 years old, and on this Veterans Day in 2020, decades later, he hasn’t forgotten. He fought in Iwo Jima, coming home from the Pacific with a Purple Heart, just one of the few in his unit to survive. “I am sure am proud of the fact that I enlisted in the Marine Corps and I thoroughly enjoyed that," Craighead said.

“It was my passion to do something for those out here that serve in our community, our country,” Butler said. The retired U.S. army sergeant opened his Shine ‘N’ Up shoeshine business in September, inside his daughters' Madison Heights barbershop. Butler offers affordable prices and discounts for veterans and first responders; and being that Wednesday was Veterans Day, he offered half off to show his appreciation for their service. “The veterans that spent their lives, so we could have freedom, means a lot,” Butler said. “It means a lot to me that God has seen me this far.”Honoring the military not just on Veterans Day, but every day because it’s in his soul -- and in his soles.

The pandemic didn’t stop the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford from paying tribute this Veterans Day.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A group braved the rain to observe Veterans Day in front of Lynchburg’s Monument Terrace. They closed Church Street for the event featuring a wreath laying, tolling of the bell, a rifle salute and the playing of Taps. The Lynchburg Area Veterans Council sponsored the event, which also included guest speakers. “They volunteered to risk their very lives, not for fame, not for fortune, but only to serve our nation,” said Air Force veteran Glenn Spears. The group meets at Monument Terrace every Friday afternoon to honor veterans.

BEDFORD, Va. – Every November, for more than a century, Americans have recognized Veterans Day as a time to honor and thank veterans. “Veterans Day is a day to honor those who have served in uniform," said John Long, director of education for the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. Long said Veterans Day goes back to the end of World War II, specifically November 11, 1918. One that day, Long said, "The guns fell silent in Europe. In 1954, President Eisenhower officially renamed the day “Veterans Day” to be inclusive to all veterans.

PULASKI, Va. – A Pulaski County confectionary delivered free sweet treats to servicemembers on Veterans Day. Robin Burdette’s business, Blue Ridge Fudge Lady, handed out fudge to more than 75 veterans this year. I’m grateful.”Burdette received help from dozens of volunteer delivery people in Pulaski County, including Sheriff Mike Worrell and Commonwealth’s Attorney Justin Griffith. “Having the opportunity to go out, talk to our veterans, and show our appreciation, it’s just an awesome experience," said Worrell. “People here are actually taking that next step to actually show veterans support and do something to help them," Griffith said.

ROANOKE, Va. – Women can now serve in every branch of the military but that wasn’t always the case. She added on one more year of service and moved to Hawaii, serving during the Korean War. For this Navy Veteran, serving our country is not something she takes lightly. She continued serving when she got out of the Navy and went to school on the GI Bill in Hawaii. She moved back to Roanoke, where she taught school for 27 years finishing at Monterrey Elementary School.

LEXINGTON, Va – One of the nation’s top military institution’s Founder’s Day just so happens to coincide with Veterans Day. Despite the rainy weather, dozens of cadets came together to celebrate nearly two hundred years of tradition at Virginia Military Institute. On November 11, 1839, the first cadet took guard for the first time at Virginia Military Institute. “We had all 10 companies plus the band represented the officers of each company were here as well as five cadets from each company,” Wyatt said. VMI has certainly changed and faced challenges over the years, but cadets and faculty believe the institute is moving in the right direction.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech’s Corps of Cadets continued its somber Veterans Day tradition this year. Two cadets started standing watch at the university’s War Memorial at midnight on Veterans Day. The cadets change shifts every hour, with cadets continually guarding the Pylons for 48 hours. He said the experience was humbling, especially being surrounded by the names of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni killed in the line of duty. The solemn nature of it.”According to the Corps of Cadets, the tradition dates back to the 1980s.

Texas Roadhouse: The roadhouse is offering free lunch for active members and veterans from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. This includes veterans, active military members and their families.

ROANOKE, Va. – Virginia’s Veterans Parade is canceled this year in an effort to protect our nation’s heroes during the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers hoped things would change by the fall; however, with the continued spread of the virus, they knew they had to make a change. “As we go into this different year, we’ve all had to sacrifice and we realize now the sacrifices they’ve made for our country and hopefully as we have a celebratory event this year they’ll realize that we’re still thinking about them,” said Jeff Perkins, Boxley Materials Company president and planning committee member. For more than 10 years, the community has showed-up in support of the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. Since there will be no parade, on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m., WSLS 10 will air a 30-minute special tribute to local veterans.

BEDFORD, Va. - For Veterans Day, thousands came to celebrate veterans at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. Local elementary students paid tribute in songs, while high school students brought in the flags. Peter Caddick-Adams writes in "Sand and Steel" more than 4,000 people died on D-Day, but 10,000 soldiers died during the training before the war. So really, I think we need to be paying tribute to those who died in the training and preparation as on that first day of combat," Caddick-Adams said. At the end of the program, veterans lined up to be embraced and thanked by local students and community.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The annual Veterans Day remembrance ceremony was held Monday morning on Virginia Tech's campus. It was a solemn day on Virginia Tech's campus as students, staff and community members honored our country's veterans. U.S. Army veterans Jessica Pharis and Nicole Akers said that Veterans Day means something different to each of them. "I really appreciate getting to celebrate Veterans Day and just to invest in the next generation as they continue their journey," Akers said. Cadets stood guard for 24 hours at the Pylons and the Rock, a memorial to Virginia Tech alumni lost in World War I.

Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day, also marks another special day for service members. It honors the establishment of the U.S. Marine Corps. The military branch started way back in 1775 as part of the U.S. Navy, leading up to the American Revolution. ROANOKE, Va. - Veterans Day came early in the Roanoke Valley. Hundreds watched the Virginia's Veterans Parade march through downtown Roanoke on Saturday morning. A multitude of veterans stood on the sidewalks to witness the parade, including married couple Robert and Debra Hopson. "We met in Denver, Colorado, at the Lowry Air Force Base 45 years ago," said Robert Hopson. After the parade, the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution placed a wreath at the Roanoke Veterans Memorial.

ROANOKE, Va. - Mission BBQ plans to honor the sacrifice of those who served or are currently serving with a special celebration on Veterans Day. Veterans and active duty military personnel will get a free sandwich and cake Nov. 11 at the Roanoke Mission BBQ location at Towers Shopping Center. PULASKI, Va. - A candy shop in the New River Valley is planning a sweet surprise for Veterans Day, but it needs your help. The Pulaski-based Blue Ridge Fudge Lady delivers free fudge to veterans every year, and she is looking for names of veterans to deliver to this year. The Fudge Lady, whose real name is Robin Burdette, said the true joy of her Veterans Day deliveries is not sharing her fudge with the service members, but sharing stories instead. "It's a rewarding experience, and I think the veterans should be proud of their service." You can submit names of veterans on the Blue Ridge Fudge Lady's Facebook page or on her website.
