ROANOKE, Va. – Though a shooting over the weekend at Roanoke’s Valley View Mall was isolated, it had many shoppers running for their lives, thinking it was something much worse. As chaos ensued, store employees knew Colquhoun was deaf because the word ‘Deaf’ is printed on his face mask. This concern has led to an enhanced law enforcement response, including realignment of certain personnel to increase the resources available to respond to violent crime. This law enforcement response has been accompanied by a non-law enforcement response as well, involving the Gun Violence Task Force, use of a Rapid Response Team, etc.

ROANOKE, Va. – Shopping at Valley View Mall was mostly business as usual on Sunday after a person was shot inside the night before. Shoppers came back to the mall in droves, seemingly unaffected by last night’s shooting. One mall employee spoke with 10 News last night and described the incident as two sudden bursts of gunshots. “The first time it happened, it didn’t seem real...it didn’t seem like it was actually happening. The second time, it was surreal to realize there was a shooting happening,” Brandi Jarvis said.

A person was shot inside of Valley View Mall a little before 7 p.m., a terrifying scene for employees such as Brandi Jarvis. “Just a pop, pop, pop. “I have worked in this mall at many different stores for five years now, and I have never in my life been this scared,” she said. As law enforcement agencies from all across the area converged on Valley View, Police Chief Sam Roman outlined what happened within. Cummings says it was already a scary day in the mall before the shots went off.

ROANOKE, Va. – Mall owners CBL Properties, which owns the Valley View Mall in Roanoke has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In August, the Tennessee-based company said it had entered into a restructuring support agreement in an attempt to try to strengthen its balance sheet. The mall owner has struggled during the pandemic with its tenants not paying rent or pushing payments back. Some of them, like J.C. Penney, have also filed for bankruptcy protection this year. The Valley View Mall will not be closing because of this announcement.

ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke is getting a new restaurant. The former O’Charley’s on Valley View Boulevard will be transformed into a Crab Du Jour. Right now, there is only one Crab Du Jour in all of Virginia and it’s on Wards Road in Lynchburg. Other than Roanoke, new restaurants are planned in 35 other locations, including four others in Norfolk, Charlottesville, Henrico and Richmond. While the Roanoke location has a Facebook page, which was created on Aug. 31, there’s no mention of when its grand opening will be.

ROANOKE, Va. Fire crews are at the scene of a fire at the Red Robin at Valley View Mall in Roanoke. Authorities say they got the call around 9:15 a.m. When units arrived, they say they found smoke coming out of the restaurant in the 4800 block of Valley View Blvd. No injuries have been reported and authorities say the cause is under investigation. 10 News has a crew at the scene working to get more information.

ROANOKE, Va. Drivers on I-581 near the Valley View Mall area of Roanoke can expect delays on Friday night. A tractor-trailer crash is causing backups near mile marker three in both directions. As of 9:04 p.m., the northbound left shoulder, left lane and center lane are closed. The southbound left shoulder and left lane are closed, according to VDOT.

ROANOKE, Va. – An employee at another restaurant surrounding the Valley View Mall has tested positive for the coronavirus. On Monday, a Cheddar’s employee informed his or her boss that he or she had tested positive for COVID-19, according to Rich Jeffers, a company spokesman. This employee, who does not interact with guests, last worked on June 26 and at the time did not display any symptoms. Once Cheddar’s learned about the diagnosis, Jeffers said the restaurant was sanitized using CDC-approved disinfectant. This employee will not be permitted to return to work until he or she has a written medical release or meets requirements to return to work per CDC guidelines.

ROANOKE, Va. – A Mexican restaurant in Roanoke is temporarily closed after one of its employee tested positive for the coronavirus. Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant, which is located just outside the Valley View Mall, will remain closed until June 22, according to a company spokeswoman. This comes after an employee tested positive for COVID-19. According to Abuelo’s, other employees who were exposed will be in quarantine for the standard amount of time. The restaurant is now following Virginia Health Department COVID-19 cleaning procedures.

ROANOKE, Va. – The public information officer for the Roanoke City Police Department says they received information that there could be potential civil unrest in the Valley View area. A spokesperson with CBL Properties said the decision to close the mall was made after they received information about the potential protests. According to the mall’s website, it will reopen Wednesday at 11 a.m.

ROANOKE, Va. – There was no massive crowd waiting outside Valley View Mall as it reopened, but there were people trickling in and out two or three at a time. "I’m just at that age that I’m not worried. A customer enters Valley View Mall shortly after it opened Friday morning. Seating areas will also be closed and mall staff will be required to wear a mask when they’re in the mall common areas. She also encouraged shoppers Friday to check the mall’s website before coming, as some businesses may choose not to open yet.

ROANOKE, Va. – At 11 a.m. Friday, Valley View Mall will open for the first time since March 25. Mall management announced Tuesday that the mall will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The announcement did state that individual store hours and restaurant operations may vary. While the mall is opening, there will be noticeable changes for mall goers. ROANOKE, Va. – The city of Roanoke has officially received a proposal to develop its largest swath of unused land. The site is just across Interstate 581 from Valley View Mall, and Pavilion’s plan would finish the incomplete Valley View Drive/I-581 interchange. “Certainly having it actually filed is a pretty big milestone for us.”According to the 114-page application, the planned development would extend Valley View Drive through Evans Spring. The development would include a “wholesale warehouse club,” a “golf-related entertainment facility,” a grocery store, and up to 300 apartments. “If it’s done well, it could be a great benefit for Northwest Roanoke and a great benefit for the city," Shaw said.

ROANOKE, Va. - The rain on Halloween night may have made traditional trick-or-treating a challenge, but malls throughout the area provided an alternative. Several malls hosted indoor trick-or-treating, including Valley View Mall and Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke, River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg and New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. Valley View's event proved to be popular, as the mall filled up with kids in costumes looking for treats. Most were accompanied by their parents, with several of them also getting into the Hallowen spirit. ROANOKE, Va. - Best Buy is among the retailers recruiting employees for the holiday shopping season. The company is hosting job fairs across the country to gear up for the busy months ahead. ROANOKE, Va. - A new mixed-use town center could be coming to the Roanoke Valley near Valley View Mall. North Carolina based-developer "Pavilion" submitted plans to the city, and Wednesday night they took those ideas to the people with a public meeting. The development is planned for the Evans Spring area, which is south of Valley View Mall across 581. "Our message is to get engaged in the process, especially if you live near or would be impacted by development there and stay engaged throughout the entire process," Chittum said. "I don't see a need for a town center when we have Valley View on our back, about five minutes from where I live," said Yuvonne Tinsley, who lives near the proposed development.

ROANOKE, Va. - Roanoke City and Valley View Mall officials are optimistic after Sears announced its closing its Roanoke location. In Lynchburg, River Ridge Mall plans to demolish the former Sears building and replace it with new, big box retailers. "Maybe a woman's clothing store or something for kids," said Sharoya Thompson, who works at Valley View Mall. A Sears spokesperson told 10 News that information about "the number of store employees impacted is not available. The mall's property owner, CBL Propertiesc told WSLS:"We see this as an opportunity that will have a positive impact on the mall.

ROANOKE, Va. - The Fill the Boot campaign benefiting people living with muscular dystrophy in Roanoke is a family affair for some and personal for others. Local firefighters and other volunteers were out at Valley View Mall on Saturday, braving the heat, to collect donations on a busy shopping day. "The Muscular Dystrophy Association does great work. He met Roanoke firefighters at a camp years ago. The firefighters and volunteers will be back out taking donations Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Valley View Mall.

ROANOKE, Va. - UPDATEAppalachian Power reports Sunday's outage is due to a failure of the main transformer with the substation that powers the area around Valley View. Power is estimated to be restored around 11 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Appalachian Power website. Power outages are being reported in Roanoke on Sunday. Appalachian Power says there are 1,904 outages in Roanoke. The Valley View Mall and areas surrounding have lost power, as well.
