CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Carolina-based department store chain Belk says it will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Charlotte Observer reports that private equity firm Sycamore Partners made the announcement on Tuesday. The firm owns Belk and says it will continue with “normal operations” as it goes through bankruptcy. Sycamore Partners says it expects to emerge from bankruptcy by the end of February. Belk has more than 20,000 employees at its nearly 300 stores in 16 Southeastern states.

Area small businesses are also feeling the pressure because while ordering from their websites is as easy as Amazon, they don’t have thousands of people working with dedicated shipping channels like national retailers do. “They’re going back to check their tracking. They want their package and it literally still says that it’s sitting at my house and it’s not,” Vaughn said. Vaughn has been accused of fraud, threatened with bad reviews, and plagued with customers who say their packages never showed. Vaughn insures her packages, but said customers don’t want to deal with the post office, they expect her to fix it.

Amazon Prime Days are here, and as the author of this story, I have to tell you: I did a LOT more online purchasing than I planned on, just while sitting around my house in quarantine last year.

ROANOKE, Va. – With corporate giants dominating online holiday sales, small local businesses are relying on shoppers’ dollars this holiday season to stay afloat. After 38 years of business, this year started off slow for Laura Duckworth, co-owner of Gift Niche in downtown Roanoke. Duckworth said sales normally trickle in at the start of October, but December’s sales alone help support her business till at least March. And other business owners seem to be in the same boat. I just take it day by day.”But to the business owners who are looking for a light at the end of the tunnel, Dale said keep pushing forward.

Starting Saturday, Walmart began counting customers who enter and exit the store “out of an abundance of caution,” the retail giant says. Back in April, Walmart started restricting the number of people inside its stores to not exceed five customers per 1,000 square feet or about 20% of a store’s capacity, according to CNBC. However, the retailer reportedly stopped physically counting people as they came inside and left. As of Monday, more than 68,500 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 across the country, more than at any other point during the pandemic, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

Bed Bath & Beyond is cutting back on its coupon mailers. The company says they aren’t going away completely, but in a bid to boost profits and be more competitive on pricing with competitors, the company is planning to scale back. Bed Bath and Beyond says it has seen more than one million new customers this year, in large part due to the pandemic. It said those new customers skew younger, on average, and are 20% less likely to use a coupon.

Instant Pots are insanely popular, so if you already have one, you know just how versatile this kitchen appliance can be. It’s really great for steaming veggies, too. ROANOKE, Va. Count Kohls among the nationwide retailers who will not be open this Thanksgiving. The retail giant made the announcement on Wednesday, with CEO Michelle Gass saying, The holiday season is when Kohls shines brightest, and as we move into the holiday season of this very unusual year, we are adapting our plans in response to changing customer expectations and behaviors.We are deeply appreciative of how our team of Kohls associates have shown up to serve our customers through this pandemic and know that they will continue to show Kohls at our best throughout the holidays, continued Gass. Kohls said it made the decision given the importance of safety and convenience. Other retailers who will not be open on Thanksgiving Day include Best Buy, Dicks Sporting Goods, Target and Walmart. Best Buy announced its plan earlier on Wednesday.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Monkee’s of Lynchburg will close for good at the end of June. In an Instagram post, the company wrote the Lynchburg location didn’t bring in enough business to justify an operation. According to the the store’s website, Monkee’s of Lynchburg, which is in the Boonsboro Shopping Center, is the fourth location in Virginia and the 27th in the country.

DANVILLE, Va. – Shoppers will soon have one less option at the Danville Mall. JCPenney announced it is closing the Danville location. The location inside Danville Mall is one of the 154 JCPenney stores closing down in the near future. It’s not clear yet when the Danville store will close. ROANOKE, Va. – At 11 a.m. Friday, Valley View Mall will open for the first time since March 25. Mall management announced Tuesday that the mall will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The announcement did state that individual store hours and restaurant operations may vary. While the mall is opening, there will be noticeable changes for mall goers.
