Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images(CNN) - California lawmakers were evacuated Friday after a woman tossed a feminine hygiene product containing what appeared to be blood onto the Senate floor. The woman threw the object from the Senate gallery, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, which is investigating the incident. "The California state Senate, it's a crime scene," Sen. Richard Pan's office said. Gavin Newsom signed two bills -- SB 276 and a companion bill SB 714 -- limiting medical exemptions for vaccines. Pan introduced SB 276 in February, and compared Friday's incident to an assault against him by an anti-vaccination activist last month.

Gavin Newsom on Monday signed two bills that limit medical exemptions for vaccines of schoolchildren. Under SB 276, California's Department of Public Health would investigate medical exemptions from doctors who have granted five or more in a year. California is among a handful of states -- including New York -- that do not offer personal, philosophical or religious exemptions from school vaccination requirements. California, which previously had notable levels of unvaccinated schoolchildren, has recently seen an overall decrease after the state outlawed non-medical exemptions. Additionally, the legislation gives California the authority to revoke a medical exemption deemed "inappropriate" by a state physician or public health officer.
