The road to the state title game has come with its own challenges for the Radford Bobcats. A young team that was trying to work its kinks out early in the season, plagued with a COVID-19 shutdown, and weather cancellations.

Carroll County girls also advanced to the Class 3 Championship.

Eight local squads had advanced to state semifinal action.

In the Region 1C quarterfinals, Auburn girls defeated Covington 65-34.

After the first quarter, this game was tied 14-14.

3-seed Radford beat 6-seed Floyd County on Friday night in the opening round of the Region 2C playoffs.

The Bobcats proved to be dangerous with a win against James River, 42-0.

ROANOKE, Va. – Radford running back and all-purpose athlete PJ Prioleau announced via Twitter his commitment to continue his academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech. That same year, Prioleau also earned Region 2C Offensive Player of the Year and VHSL Class 2 First Team All-State as a running back. On the court, Prioleau helped lead the Bobcats to a 30-0 record and a Class 2 VHSL State Championship during the 2018-2019 season. PJ will follow in the footsteps of his father, Pierson Prioleau, who spent his college career in Blacksburg as well. RADFORD, Va. – Radford’s Zane Rupe signed to play football at Emory and Henry next fall on Wednesday. In 2019, he passed for 878 yards and 9 touchdowns, while rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns. Emory and Henry is also making the transition from Division III to Division II, something Rupe is looking forward to. “I’m really looking forward to them move up to D2 and have more competition, I’m excited for that,” Rupe said. “They have a really good football team, I love the coaching staff, they put a lot of effort into recruiting me, I appreciated that.

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – In our Game of the Week, the Radford Bobcats left no doubt as to who the better team was on Friday night. Late in the third quarter, they scored to take a commanding 46-0 lead and would go on to only allow James River to score one touchdown.

RADFORD, Va. – After a plethora of Region title games cancelled on Friday, the Glenvar girls were able to travel to Radford for a Region 2C showdown. The Bobcats lead until the third quarter, where the Highlanders were able to pull away thanks in part to guard Olivia Harris, who had 13 points that quarter, 35 overall. “It started out, we had this mentality we would lose at first. We put it together, we had a talk in the locker room, got it straight, and got the dub,” Harris said. “I’ve been working on this the whole year, but we just felt like we needed to get a state dub this year, and it’s my final year, so I’m really excited to get it this year.”Glenvar will now travel to Gate City on Wednesday for the Class 2 State Semifinal.

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Bobcats defeated the Giles Spartans 69-12 in a season opener that featured a Three Rivers District matchup. Coach Rick Cormany’s crew played a complete game from start to finish and it started with the younger Cormany’s-- Cam and Gavin. Cam Cormany started the game with back-to-back three pointers, followed up by one from the wing by Gavin. The two combined for 25 points for the game, as the Bobcats made 13 three pointers in the win. Prioleau started and contributed two buckets in his first action since tearing his ACL during the 2019 football season.

Radford/Salem/Roanoke, VA – A prep signing period opens Wednesday for everyone other than football and men’s and women’s D-1 hoops. At the home of the Bobcats, Radford star volleyball player Trinity Adams is headed to SEC and national power Florida. Adams helped lead the Bobcats to a state championship right here in nearby Salem, as they defeated Poquoson for the title. And at Patrick henry, the Patriots multi-sport star Savannah Derey will play lacrosse at the next level. Lauren Pickett will play volleyball at D-2 Eckerd College, Meleah Kirtner will play hoops at ETSU and Daniel Goode will drive up I-81 and play golf for Radford.

RADFORD, Va. – Radford Bobcats head coach Matthew Saunders knows its been a quiet off season for his players. “Well, you can tell they haven’t been doing a whole lot so you have to tone it down a little bit,” said Saunders. We do stations of cone drills, ladders, bag drills, we can’t have a ball yet it’s kind of tough. “It’s been tough because you don’t know where to start, what you want to get in, what you don’t want to get in,” said Saunders. In the other Class 5 girls game, the William Fleming girls fell to Woodgrove 51-47. On the boys side, defending state champ GW Danville advanced to their third final 4 in four years with a 63-55 win over Loudon County. Halifax County fell to Millbrook 61-58. In Class 1, Grundy edges Parry McCluer 49-46, while Auburn vs Eastside scheduled for UVA-Wise was moved to Saturday because of snow. Honaker defeated George Wythe 65-59 and PH Glade Spring downs Galax 51-30.and in Class 1 Grundy beat Parry McCluer 49-46.

SALEM, Va. – It proved to be a clean sweep on the volleyball court for our local teams in the VHSL State Finals. Auburn rose to the occasion and soared to win its first state title since 2014. In Class 2, the Radford Bobcats were in the state final for the third consecutive season, hoping to win its second in a row. The teams said this was there first time winning a match that went to five sets this season. Lord Botetourt completes the season with a record of 31-0, with each win coming via straight sets.
