On Thursday, Visit Virginias Blue Ridge held its quarterly meeting in the hotel to witness first-hand the new social spacing protocols put in place as a result of COVID-19, according to a news release. ROANOKE, Va. A third student has been sentenced in last years theft of the Hokie Bird statue from the Hotel Roanoke. On Sept. 27, 2019, the statue was stolen from its base on the south side of the hotel. It was later found on the side of a road near Charlottesville later that day, according to police. Durbin is the third out of a trio of men involved in the incidents, all members of James Madison Universitys Sigma Nu Fraternity pledge class. Each student involved is also required to pay a third of the statues cost, $7,500 each.

About 300 people came out for the 29th annual Southwest Virginia Business Hall of Fame celebration. Dr. Cynda Johnson, founding dean of the VTC School of Medicine and James Smith of Smith Packett are this year's laureates. Michael Fleming of Torc Robotics and John Lugar of Virginia Varsity Transfer and Storage are this year's entrepreneurs of the year. "Tonight is an opportunity to be a springboard for our young people to realize that the studies they have are going to lead them into a career that can be very promising and sometimes you can do that with your friends," Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia President Katherin Elam said.

ROANOKE, Va. - Ballroom dancers from up and down the East Coast came to the Hotel Roanoke on Sunday for the Star Ball Dance Challenge. 29 dancers from different age groups and levels showed off their moves in front of three world-class judges. Dancers ranged in ages from 16 to 93 years old. In addition to the competitors, two professional ballroom dancers, Simona Caporale and Simone Spadon, danced the bolero, rumba and the cha-cha. Breast cancer survivors are the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S. at 3.8 million people, and this event helps celebrate their stories. The 43-year-old mother of five was diagnosed with stage 3 and then stage 4 breast cancer. "Speaking at this event is because of that promise, my promise was to do everything in power to make sure my children were never walk in my shoes to make sure my children don't face breast cancer," said Fink. By 2026, Komen's goal is to reduce breast cancer deaths by 50%.

The 20th annual Virginia Statewide Neighborhood Conference is in full swing at the Hotel Roanoke. It's a place to collaborate and share ideas about what works best and where they can improve. Estelle H. McCadden, of Roanoke, started the conference in 2000 and never thought it would grow to be this large, traveling to different Virginia cities each year, but says it's a must because neighborhoods are the backbone of the state. The conference wraps Saturday with an awards luncheon.
