ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – A Rocky Mount veteran now has a new roof thanks to a nationwide effort giving back to those who have served our country. Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County identified a Navy veteran in need and teamed up with Vinton Roofing Company to make it happen. It’s all part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. Vinton Roofing Company general manager Jason Webb said this home was in desperate need of repair, but the veteran wasn’t able to afford it on his own. The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project has given free roofs to more than 225 military members.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Three families will be able to have new homes thanks to a donation to Amherst County’s Habitat for Humanity. Habitat announced they are receiving three building lots from Robert Dawson and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Dawson Ford Garbee Realtors in Lynchburg. The homes will be built next to each other off Route 675. So, this is awesome to have,” said Debbie Habel, executive director of Amherst County Habitat for Humanity. They hope to start construction by fall of next year and have them completed by 2022.

Courtney Warren, her three children and her nephew moved into the home shortly after Friday’s dedication and celebration. “Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you,” Warren said. “We couldn’t do it without our WSLS family and our sponsors and volunteers, so thank you,” said Karen Mason, executive director for Habitat. Work to clear the lot where the Warren family home was built happened in December 2019, but construction was delayed in the spring because of the coronavirus pandemic. This is the sixth “Home for Good” project WSLS 10 has been a part of.

ROANOKE, Va. – Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, plenty of rainy days and everything else 2020 has thrown our way, this year’s “Home for Good” project will wrap up later this month. WSLS 10 has been working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley, generous community sponsors and volunteers to help a deserving family in our area become homeowners. The journey to build Warren’s four-bedroom home started in December 2019 when crews cleared the lot on Moorman Avenue in Roanoke for the home. Since then, volunteers and sponsors have been able to safely return, and Chicosky said they have played a crucial role in keeping the build on schedule. Warren will get the keys to her new home during the October 23 home dedication.

ROANOKE, Va. – Making the dream of homeownership a reality and doing it in an environmental-friendly way. Now, that mission of Habitat for Humanity is being rewarded. Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley was named affiliate of the year for 2019 by Viridiant. Habitat Roanoke certified eight houses in 2019 as environmentally friendly, five of which were rehabs. The nonprofit said it hopes to continue making housing affordable for families and reduce energy.

Thats why Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley worked through the pandemic to finish its most recent project. Several New River Valley families are waking up in new affordable homes because of it, but the organization said they cant take all the credit. The Homes on Church Street project located near Downtown Blacksburg is the first multi-family project, costing $1.4 million. Levonne Wallace (center) with her two children will move into their Habitat for Humanity home mid-September. Habitat for Humanity is working on a similar project in Floyd and plans to break ground next year.

Saturday volunteers from Habitat for Humanity and JES Foundation Repair were on site finishing up windows and putting the final touches on the crawl space underneath the house. Courtney Warren was also on site helping with the build, she says she and her children will move in once its complete and can’t wait to call the house their home. “Working three jobs is kind of difficult but the kids are excited I’m excited and its even great just having my hands in it,” Warren said.

Members of the WSLS team and volunteers from Marvin Windows and Doors were at the site on Friday making progress on the home being built along Moorman Avenue in Roanoke. Da'Quon Turner, with Marvin Windows and Doors, said this was a great opportunity to give back to the community. Since then, the first floor has been laid out, and work is underway on the second floor. Chicosky said one of the highlights of this build has been the excitement of Courtney Warren, the homebuyer, and her family. The Warren family is just coming out full force to get their daughter and family member into a home, and thats what its all about, Chicosky said.

Mayor Sherman Lea of Roanoke said it is the Roanoke way for everyone in the community to pitch in and help each other. Work on the home as a part of this year’s “Home for Good” project was originally scheduled to start in early April, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of construction.

Habitat for Humanity cleared the lot in December 2019, but work on the home came to a screeching halt in March because of COVID-19. Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley had to get resourceful to keep its construction schedule on track. The Habitat ReStore is a reuse store that accepts donations and sells home improvement items to the public at a fraction of the cost. With the Commonwealth slowly reopening, so it Habitat for Humanity.

Va. – The Ramos family was welcomed to their new home in Roanoke on Saturday. The family waited two years for the home to be built by the city of Roanoke and Habitat for Humanity. The new homeowners said it took a lot of meetings and hard work to make it all possible. The homeowners said they can’t wait to use the kitchen during the holidays so their mother can cook.

ROANOKE, Va. – A lot has changed in the Garcia household in the last five years. Thanks to hard work, determination and volunteers, the Garcia family is enjoying the holidays in their very own home once again. Veronica and her kids moved to Roanoke from California in 2011 to escape domestic violence. “It’s great to see the changes in the family and the stability and the success that they experience,” Mason said. Even after five years, the Garcia family is still just as grateful as the day they received the keys to their new home.
