The Auburn Eagles hosted the George Wythe Maroons this Friday night.

A rematch of last year’s semifinal was on tap in Grayson County Friday night. Last year’s semifinal saw a narrow win for the Blue Devils en route to the team’s first-ever state finals appearance.

George Wythe continued its dominance in the Mountain Empire with a thrilling 33-32 victory over Rural Retreat, extending the Maroons’ winning streak in this matchup to 20 straight games dating back to 2006.

In a Mountain Empire match-up, Fort Chiswell visited George Wythe, where the Maroons honored their boys and girls state champion basketball teams.

The Maroons fell to Rappahannock in the Class 1 team tennis final 5-2.

The Maroons and Pioneers are set to meet for the Region 1C Championship.

The Bobcats came up short against Bruton who found itself in the team state championship game for the third consecutive season.

It’s hard to beat a team twice, let alone in a Region Championship, but George Wythe did just that on Saturday. The Maroons beat Grayson County 48-28 for the Region 1C title.

Two of the Mountain Empire District’s top teams met again on Friday night, this time with a trip to the Region 1C final on the line.

Galax will be hosting the Region 1C championship next week after beating George Wythe, 41-21, on Friday night.

The Bulldogs will play at Abingdon to start State Tournament play. The Comets reach the State Tournament in back-to-back seasons, first final four appearance in over 4 decades.

Radford/Salem/Roanoke, VA – A prep signing period opens Wednesday for everyone other than football and men’s and women’s D-1 hoops. At the home of the Bobcats, Radford star volleyball player Trinity Adams is headed to SEC and national power Florida. Adams helped lead the Bobcats to a state championship right here in nearby Salem, as they defeated Poquoson for the title. And at Patrick henry, the Patriots multi-sport star Savannah Derey will play lacrosse at the next level. Lauren Pickett will play volleyball at D-2 Eckerd College, Meleah Kirtner will play hoops at ETSU and Daniel Goode will drive up I-81 and play golf for Radford.

Salem, Va. – Southwest Virginia’s top team contender in the class 1 ranks remains Rural Retreat. The Knights Mason Stewart won the 138-pound crown with a 5-2 decision, to help his father’s team to a program best--third place team finish. .I"I feel like most of the people on my team know what to do next year, we’re gonna bring it next year. I think they’re going to know how to overcome that and get in the finals next year," Mason Stewart explained. The Blue Demons won this head to head battle with the Trojans at 120, when Brandon Crowder racked up a 3-0 decision win.
