Humble Hustle hosted a drive-thru fundraiser at the Villa Heights Recreation Center. The historic mansion was recently restored, but the renovation did not include the adjoining playground or the basketball court. The organization sees Villa Heights as the heart of northwest Roanoke. They believe a restored playground and basketball court would be an indispensable asset for the children of the neighborhood.

DANVILLE, Va. – An annual fundraiser to help feed Southside’s hungry population returned this weekend, with some COVID-safe alterations. Empty Bowls raised more than $7,000 for Danville charity God’s Storehouse on Saturday. The event typically features both hand-painted bowls and a community soup luncheon. God’s Storehouse executive director Karen Harris said the ramifications of the pandemic made this event more essential than ever this year. “Some people have to make a choice between buying medicine and buying food for their family.”

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – A father grieving the loss of his 3-year-old son received emotional and financial support from an airsoft shooting club. Roanoke Airsoft organized a special match on Sunday for David Berger, who also participated in the event. Berger said the fundraiser is important, but the brotherhood of the sport has immensely helped him deal with the pain of losing his son. “To be honest, if it wasn’t for friends like this, I probably wouldn’t be here,” Berger said. “It’s been really nice having a bunch of friends helping me through the hardest time of my life.”

Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Tiffany Haddish and Brad Paisley have all signed up to participate — as well as Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, for the first time. The fundraiser, which benefits injured veterans and their families, will also feature comedians and musicians including Nate Bargatze, Ronny Chieng, Mickey Guyton, Patti Scialfa, Iliza Shlesinger, Jeannie Gaffigan and Ray Romano.

The line for hot dogs backed up onto Route 460, and the rescue squad had trouble keeping up with the demand at times. “We had to call other businesses to see if they could donate weenies and buns," said Giles Rescue Squad Sergeant Amber Jones, who came up with the idea for the fundraiser. They don’t want a hot dog, they just want to show their support," said Freeman. "We try to get them to take a hot dog, and they don’t want one. They just came to give.”The rescue squad raised approximately $20,000 before the hot dog benefit, which means Freeman now has about $40,000 to find a new home.

The Ruritan Service Club organized a motorcycle ride through the New River Valley to raise money for the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. The Cruise for St. Judes started at Ruritans headquarters outside of Dublin and went through Bland and Wytheville. We do have children in the New River Valley who have been to St. Judes, said Johnny Edmonds, the Ruritan member who came up with the idea for the ride. The ride is part of a yearlong, nationwide effort by Ruritan to fundraise for St. Judes. It really is a heartwarming experience to see so many bike riders here.Labor Day Weekend from now on will feature a Saint Judes ride.

SALEM, Va. For Fathers Day this year, some dads are teaming up with a Salem brewery to raise money for Feeding Southwest Virginia. Originally, for every four-pack of beer bought from Olde Salem Brewing Company between Thursday and Sunday the group of dads planned to donate $3 to the food bank. Head Brewer Kevin Campbell said hes never done anything like this before but hes happy to help. We were going to invite them in and brew beer for Fathers Day, but with the pandemic going on we couldnt do that. If 150 four-packs are bought by Sunday, the dads will donate and extra $50.
