Rather, Special Olympics Virginiaโ€™s Southwest Region basketball tournament attracted 25 teams around the region to Blacksburg. โ€œOut of all of the places they play, Tech is their favorite place,โ€ said April Alley, who coaches Pulaski Countyโ€™s Special Olympics basketball team. โ€œThey love it.โ€Although Virginia Techโ€™s basketball team gave up the Cassell Coliseum court to the Special Olympics athletes, Hokie basketball players watched from the sidelines and cheerleaders helped the athletes make a glamorous entrance into the arena. The win, Techโ€™s eighth of the season, signaled the final home game of 2019, where the Hokies have now defeated 58 consecutive non-conference opponents. It wasnโ€™t always a blowout on Carilion Clinic Court as Gardner-Webb started the game making shots, to which the Hokies had to respond and did so, leading by three after the first quarter. Carley Plentovich, and her sister Savannah kept the Bulldogs within armโ€™s reach as the pair combined for 34 points in the game. The Hokies will have 12 days between contests as the student-athletes complete fall exams.

Tech tied a school record with 28 assists at Cassell Coliseum. Last season in Lynchburg, Tech earned a 72-61 victory over the Flames led by Dara Mabrey who scored 13 points in her first collegiate road game.
