BLACKSBURG, Va. – An important basketball game happened at Virginia Tech’s Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, but the Hokies never touched the court. Rather, Special Olympics Virginia’s Southwest Region basketball tournament attracted 25 teams around the region to Blacksburg. “Out of all of the places they play, Tech is their favorite place,” said April Alley, who coaches Pulaski County’s Special Olympics basketball team. “They love it.”Although Virginia Tech’s basketball team gave up the Cassell Coliseum court to the Special Olympics athletes, Hokie basketball players watched from the sidelines and cheerleaders helped the athletes make a glamorous entrance into the arena. The tournament kicks off a significant month for Special Olympics Virginia.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Four players registered double figures and Tech’s defense ramped up in the second half as the Hokies defeated Gardner-Webb 87-65 at Cassell Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The win, Tech’s eighth of the season, signaled the final home game of 2019, where the Hokies have now defeated 58 consecutive non-conference opponents. It wasn’t always a blowout on Carilion Clinic Court as Gardner-Webb started the game making shots, to which the Hokies had to respond and did so, leading by three after the first quarter. Carley Plentovich, and her sister Savannah kept the Bulldogs within arm’s reach as the pair combined for 34 points in the game. The Hokies will have 12 days between contests as the student-athletes complete fall exams.

At the half, the teams were seperated by just two points, after the Hokies were held to their lowest total after 20 minutes. In the third, the Hokies scored the first nine points behind buckets from Taja Cole, Mabrey, Lydia Rivers, and Kitley. The Boilermakers would counter with a run of their own to keep the game close. The game tilted firmly in the favor of the Hokies in the third quarter when Aisha Sheppard sparked a 10-2 run with seven points of her own. The junior, who leads the team in scoring finished with 17, with 15 coming after the break.

With the win, head coach Kenny Brooks moves to 4-0 in season openers at Tech. The Hokies tied several Cassell Coliseum records recording 105 points, 44 field goals and 28 assists. Tech tied a school record with 28 assists at Cassell Coliseum.
