LEXINGTON, Va. โ€“ After months of debate, VMIโ€™s Board of Visitors voted Thursday afternoon to move the collegeโ€™s Stonewall Jackson statue. โ€œThe board should consider addressing social issues, and thatโ€™s what we are here to address today," said J. William Boland, the VMI Board of Visitors president, during the meeting. Along with moving the Confederate statue, the board of visitors wants to implement more actions to increase the schoolโ€™s diversity. The board recommended considering some of VMI graduate and Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foyโ€™s recommendations to improve the institute. Boland asked the board to submit their desired qualifications for the next superintendent to Scott within the next 10 days.

LEXINGTON, Va. โ€“ State officials have ordered an outside investigation into the Virginia Military Institute following a report in The Washington Post that described Black cadets and alumni facing โ€œrelentless racism.โ€Gov. Ralph Northam co-wrote a letter Monday with other state officials and lawmakers to the state-supported schoolโ€™s Board of Visitors expressing โ€œdeep concerns about the clear and appalling culture of ongoing structural racismโ€ at VMI. The letter said the state will fund an independent probe into the schoolโ€™s culture, policies, practices and equity in disciplinary procedures, the Post reported. The story described incidents such as lynching threats and a white professor reminiscing in class about her fatherโ€™s Ku Klux Klan membership. In addition to Northam, who is a VMI graduate, co-signers of the Monday letter included Lt. Gov.
