Cave Spring girls reach first ever title game, Glenvar boys will play for "three-peat".

The late former Emory & Henry basketball coach left a lasting impact on those in the program.

Auburn claimed its 5th consecutive while the Raiders claim their first in program history.

Auburn and Altavista to play each other in Class 1 final on Saturday.

The Spartans defeated Eastside 3-0 and will host Auburn in the Class 1 semifinals on Tuesday.

Spencer Hamilton scored 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks in the 56-39 win, as Parry McCluer won its first VHSL State Championship in program history. This season they reached a VHSL State Championship game for the first time in program history. The difference was, we made a few turnovers we didn’t want to and we had some shots that didn’t go in,” said Patrick Henry head coach Mike Hedrick. With the win Princess Anne has now won 8 consecutive VHSL State Championships, 12 overall as a program.

Big Stone Gap, Va. – In the boys Class 2 semifinals, the Radford boys stellar season ended at the hands of the Union Bears. The game was tied at 35, but the Bears ended the game on a 7-0 run to complete a 42-35 win. In the VHSL girls Class 1 semifinals, it was a battle of undefeated teams. Honaker was paced by Leeanna McNulty with 17 points. The Tigers broke open a one point game late in the 4th quarter for a 53-47 win to return to the state championship game.

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The last time Parry McCluer boys basketball was in a state title game, Talen Roberts wasn’t even born yet. Head coach Mike Cartolaro helped lead Saturday’s opponent Altavista to four state championships before returning to his alma mater in 2016. “You go a day at a time, a game at a time, you set your goals and try to accomplish those,” Cartolaro said. “It is kind of strange, it’s a game between us and them and I have to keep it that way,” Cartolaro said. Tip is at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Parry McCluer.

But after 25 years on the job, Altavista Athletic Director Dean Hubbard is retiring. “My dad was a teacher and coach for 39 years and it’s just something I always wanted to do was be a teacher and coach,” Hubbard explained. She then guided the girls basketball program to the same feat in 2004. The boys basketball program also rose to the occasion, winning a title in 2004 then storming through for 3-peat from 2013-2015, under coach Mike Cartolaro. Our son Richard played for Coach Cartolaro in the basketball program and had a chance to be on the back-to-back state championship teams,” Hubbard said.
