Virginia Tech wins ACC opener at NC State 23-21

Hokies move to 2-0 under interim coach Philip Montgomery

RALEIGH, NC – In its ACC opener, the Virginia Tech Hokies earned a road win at North Carolina State by a final score of 23-21.

It proved to be a balanced attack on both sides of the ball for the Hokies. Terion Stewart had a breakout game of sorts from the backfield. He had his best game since arriving at Tech with 174 yards rushing.

Kyron Drones was efficient through the air making 20 completions for 177 yards and two touchdowns--one to Cameron Seldon and Marcellous Hawkins.

Defensively, the Hokies played lots of young guys that proved their worth. The unit finished with 5 sacks on the night and nine tackles for loss.

John Love proved to play a pivotal role, going 3-of-3 on field goals. His 49 yarder proving to be the difference mid-way through the fourth quarter.

A crucial fourth down pass break up by Christian Ellis sent the Hokies to victory.

Before Saturday night’s win, NC State had won the previous two meetings against Virginia Tech in 2022 and 2023.


In its second game under interim head coach Philip Montgomery, Virginia Tech is leading North Carolina State 13-7 at halftime.

The offense has been in sync for much of the game with Kyron Drones completing 12 passes for 136 yards and a passing touchdown to Marcellous Hawkins. The team tallied 230 total yards in the first half.

The Hokies defense has done its part as well having racked up four first half sacks.
